The Department of Family Medicine at East Tennessee State University seeks a full-time Assistant Professor to function as a Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC). ETSU Family Medicine has a long history of integrating behavioral health providers into primary care. BHCs are built into numerous clinical pathways and serve as core members of the primary care team. The clinic has established relationships with the ETSU Department of Psychology and the Department of Social Work and regularly trains graduate students from these programs to serve in BHC and case management roles.
The ETSU Institute for Integrated Behavioral Health is a capacity-building entity within the Quillen College of Medicine (QCOM) that coordinates and supports behavioral health providers across QCOM departments and works to grow integrated care regionally. As a member of ETSU’s Institute for Integrated Behavioral Health, the BHC receives support from and contributes to the mission of the Institute while serving in the Department of Family Medicine.
This position will be an ETSU non-tenure, 12-month clinical track faculty appointment contingent on external funding.
The Faculty performs the following:
Clinical/Service:

  • Provide Behavioral Health Consultant services (brief same-day interventions, consultations) for a wide range of conditions in primary care, consistent with the Primary Care Behavioral Health model.
  • Triage patients with severe or high-risk behavioral health problems and refer patients to community resources or specialty behavioral health services as needed.
  • Provide assistance in capturing program evaluation and fidelity measures as needed.
  • Document progress notes in the health record outlining assessment findings, interventions delivered, and recommendations made to the primary care team.
  • Maintain a visible presence in the clinic and attend clinic/department meetings.
  • Maintain clinical records and other necessary paperwork in a timely manner to comply with all administrative regulations.

Teaching:

  • Participates in the education and training of an interprofessional group of learners in behavioral medicine competencies, including but not limited to: Family Medicine residents, medical students, psychology trainees (clerkship students, externs, postdoctoral fellows), social work students, and care team members.
  • Provides supervision to clinical psychology extern(s), interns, or post-doctoral fellows as needed.
  • Engages in clinical precepting as part of Family Medicine residents’ Development/Behavioral Rotation and contributes to the development and maintenance of that rotation.
  • Delivers lectures as a part of the pediatric residency training program.

Scholarly activity:

  • Engages in scholarly activity, including leading quality improvement projects.

Institute for Integrated Behavioral Health:

Participates as a member of the Institute for Integrated Behavioral Health, a capacity-building entity within the QCOM that coordinates and supports behavioral health providers across departments. The Institute aims to:
1) Implement the Primary Care Behavioral Health model of care in all QCOM clinics
2) Train medical residents and faculty on a biopsychosocial approach as well as best practices in team-based care
3) Train fellows and graduate students from a range of behavioral health graduate programs
4) Conduct quality improvement processes
5) Teach and engage in the institution’s broader network of stakeholders.
Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Experience in behavioral health counseling and brief short-term therapy strategies.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of patient-centered medical home principles, motivational interviewing skills and evidence-based short-term therapy strategies.
  • Ability to utilize assessment information and collateral information to conceptualize patient psychopathology.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of behavioral health consultation, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, cognitive-behavioral counseling strategies and their application to population-based care for preventive and chronic care issues.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the interrelationship between medical and psychological systems and their impact on health.
  • Experience in documenting clinical activities in a comprehensive, clear, concise fashion on a same day basis.
  • Skill in efficiently organizing time so that unscheduled, same day services are routinely available to care team members.
  • The ability to exercise sound judgment in appraising situations and making decisions regarding complex physical and behavioral health treatment issues in consultation with the primary care teams.
  • Skill in developing effective working relationships with peers, supervisors and professionals in related disciplines.
  • Ability to manage complex personal interactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to act with minimal supervision on personal initiative using sound clinical judgment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to patient care information and chart contents as use of patient record and privacy of individuals must be protected to the fullest.
  • Ability to maintain documentation in compliance with State, Federal, Professional and Ethical guidelines.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
Required Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. or Psy.D in Clinical Psychology.
  • Experience in behavioral health counseling and brief short-term therapy strategies and case management is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Formal training in Primary Care Behavioral Health.
  • Experience as a Behavioral Health Consultant in a Primary Care setting.
  • Interest in substance use and Medication Assistant Treatment
Salary Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Contingent on external funding.
