Position Summary/Purpose of Position: | The Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland, College Park invites applications for multiple tenure-track or tenured faculty positions. Outstanding candidates will be considered at all academic ranks and across all areas of bioengineering. We seek individuals with potential for developing an innovative, inclusive, and collaborative research program as well as commitment to excellence in graduate and undergraduate education. The department believes that diversity and inclusivity enhance our mission to educate and empower the next generation of bioengineers to develop and translate knowledge and technology to address societal grand challenges. All faculty joining the department benefit from generous compensation and start-up packages, with junior faculty further supported by a formal mentoring program. The Clark School also received the 8th largest gift in history to a public higher education institution from A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation of $220M, which includes funding to assist faculty and attract and fund first-year PhD students. Established in 2005, the Fischell Department of Bioengineering is located in the Washington DC–Baltimore metropolitan area proximate to the NIH, NSF, FDA, EPA, NASA and NIST, as well as many other health and medical science-related institutions and agencies, forming a unique and diverse hub of health-related activity. The state of Maryland also boasts one of the nation’s leading biotechnology and life sciences industry clusters and a vibrant entrepreneurial environment. The department is known for its interdisciplinary scholarship and is closely affiliated with the Robert E. Fischell Institute of Biomedical Devices, which aims to catalyze the transformation of basic research into clinical practice and commercial success. Departmental faculty are also affiliated with other engineering departments at UMD as well as the Molecular and Cell Biology Program, the Brain and Behavior Institute, the Maryland Robotics Center, and the Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research. In 2018, the department relocated to a new home in A. James Clark Hall, a 184,000 sq. ft. facility that features state-of-the-art laboratories and new departmental core facilities. The building also offers a cutting-edge vivarium and translational imaging suite, GMP production and prototyping labs, flexible classrooms, and collaborative student project space.
