Assistant Professor/Associate Professor, Plastic Surgery - Surgery, McGovern Medical School

McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), a leading academic health center, invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), non-tenure clinical track Assistant/Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery. 

 

The selected candidate will contribute to the department’s mission to educate health science professionals, discover and translate advances in the biomedical and social sciences, and model the best practices in clinical care and public health through research, teaching, clinical service, administrative activities, and other service.

 

Position Key Accountabilities:

 

The successful candidate will report to the Division Director.  We are seeking applicants with a focus on microsurgery or general plastic surgical reconstruction for both breast and trauma.  You will be expected to actively participate in the teaching and academic activities of the Department of Surgery by working with residents and fellows and in student education, including patient rounds, presentations and lectures and attendance at appropriate conferences such as Surgery Grand Rounds and Morbidity and Mortality Conferences and local and national conferences.

 

The Rank of Assistant/Associate Professor in Surgery will provide teaching, clinical service, administrative and other activities, as well as provide direct patient care and supervision of medical students and residents in clinic and hospital settings. 

 

• Developing and sustaining an environment in the patient care units that support excellence and innovation in clinical practice and patient care through assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programs and standards that support positive patient care outcomes to include excellent risk adjusted outcomes.

•  Ensuring that hospital resources are optimally utilized through participation in strategic planning and financial budgeting processes, and development of practices that achieve specific objectives and resolution of unfavorable performance variances; providing leadership and implementing strategies to provide cost effective quality care.

•  Providing coaching, mentoring, support and consultation to clinical managers, attending physicians, research personnel, colleagues, and clinical staff.

•  Serving as role model in professional behavior and leadership skills, problem-solving ability and interpersonal skills

•  Delegating authority and accountability to clinical & nursing staff for clinical practice and patient care decisions that is consistent with professional standards, regulatory agencies and organizational policies and procedures.

•  Identifying patient and family needs of the populations served; recommends and/or developing new programs and services to meet those needs; assuring that age specific equipment, supplies and educational resources are available for assigned units/services.

•  Collaborating with UTHealth and hospital administration and physicians to identify future opportunities, and define the direction of department services; developing, and implementing plans to achieve identified goals, including OR efficiency, productivity and patient through put targets across care continuum.

•  Participating in and/or chairs committees, work groups, and meetings at as appropriate.

•  Maintaining professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, in-services, current literature and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in fields of expertise; supporting and promoting education and research.

 

Qualifications:

 

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence, discovery and service, have potential to be outstanding in their field of expertise, and share an interest in fulfilling the common goals of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth.  The successful applicant must be Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, eligible for licensure in the State of Texas.  Preferred applicants will be fellowship trained in microsurgery.

 

Optimal candidates will help build the Breast Microsurgery program in conjunction with UT partners in General Surgery and our Breast Reconstruction teams.  With privileges at Memorial Hermann Hospital, a busy level 1 trauma center, expertise in breast reconstruction with fellowship training in microsurgery is preferred.
