Job Summary
The Civil Engineering department (CE) in the College of Engineering, the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Architectural Engineering (AREN) with focus on smart & sustainable building to be hired to begin Fall 2023.

Department and College/School Information
The College of Engineering is home to seven departments: Bioengineering; Civil Engineering; Computer Science and Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering; Materials Science and Engineering; and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. With more than 7,000 students, the College is the third-largest in Texas and offers the most comprehensive engineering degree programs in the region. It offers 10 baccalaureate, 14 master’s, and 9 doctoral degree programs and has ties to numerous Fortune 500 companies in the region. The College is enjoying extraordinary growth in graduate and undergraduate student enrollment and in student graduation. This growth has been concomitant with growth in research expenditures, collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship by faculty and students. The Civil Engineering Department has enjoyed significant growth in recent years and enjoys a robust research enterprise in the areas of construction engineering and management; environmental engineering; geotechnical engineering; infrastructure system engineering and management; structural engineering and mechanics; transportation engineering; and water resources engineering, with per-faculty research expenditures totaling more than $320,000. In addition, the department works with many top civil engineering firms in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as well as the Texas Department of Transportation, NOAA and other government agencies.
AREN at UTA
The undergraduate Architectural Engineering (AREN) program at UTA was established in Fall 2015 in the Civil Engineering Department and accredited by ABET in 2019. The main objective of the AREN program is to educate students to engineer buildings as part of team with general focus on building structure, mechanical, electrical systems, and construction management. After the successful start of the new program, enrollment has continuously grown to around 200 students in Fall 2022. Current enrollment represents a diversely distributed population. Faculty in the program have been involved in interdisciplinary communities, i.e., IEA EBC Annex 79, ACM, ASCE, ASHRAE, and IBPSA. In April 2022, UTA AREN successfully hosted ASCE Forum event (link), “Mega City 2070: The Future Vision of Urban Infrastructure”.
The UTA AREN program also offers a graduate program in Smart and Sustainable Building. This research area has secured several grants from NSF, USDOT, TxDOT, and UT system. The program has supported undergraduate/graduate students in various research projects. This new area will create a variety of innovative research themes such as smart and sustainable buildings and human building interaction and should be supported with a new faculty’s unique and novel research interests to promote better education and research programs at UTA.
Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area is the fourth largest metroplex and the fastest growing area in the U.S. The area is experiencing exponential growth which is having a huge impact on energy efficiency and environmental impacts from the building sector. Our program will mitigate the competency gap of advanced building technologies and graduate education at UTA. Our students will be trained well when entering the workforce by applying advanced knowledges and skills immediately.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This position will contribute to the AREN program at UTA in three dimensions: Research, Teaching, and Service. Faculty responsibilities include 1) Developing an original research program in Smart and Sustainable Buildings and mentoring undergraduate/graduate students, 2) Teaching core curriculum and elective courses in Architectural Engineering, with preference in the area of smart and sustainable buildings (e.g., building science, HVAC, electrical systems, building enclosure, building energy simulation, smart buildings, etc.), and 3) Participating in department, college, university, and public service.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must have earned a doctorate degree in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field by the start of the appointment, with a record of scholarly achievement that qualifies for a tenure-track position.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate should have a clear vision in the field of smart & sustainable buildings which requires both research and teaching commitments in architectural engineering. The ideal candidate should take a pivotal role to lead the AREN program at UTA.

Professional licensure or the ability to obtain it shortly after hire.
