General Summary: The nursing faculty is a creative, knowledgeable, and flexible individual who provides classroom, simulation laboratory, and/or clinical instruction in medical-surgical nursing for assigned courses in the nursing program. The Nursing Simulation/Lab Education Coordinator receives one reassigned time per semester for these coordinator responsibilities including oversight of laboratory and simulation academic coordination of the Practical Nursing Program.  These duties are performed in the fall, winter intersession, and spring semesters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Classroom (didactic) instruction involves sessions which last up to three hours for a group of up to 32 students. This requires the preparation of materials, conducting lectures/discussions using a variety of instructional materials and technologies, and effective exam question development, administration, and evaluation of assessments using ExamSoft. This may include ExamSoft training, submitting questions through ExamSoft, and tagging exam questions.
  • Laboratory instruction includes didactic presentations, demonstrations, use of simulation technology and working knowledge of providing student simulations, skill remediation, and evaluation of skill competence. Laboratory sessions are typically two to four hours for each session. Lab instruction may also include the preparation of equipment and materials for labs as well as securing/putting away equipment after the conclusion of the lab.
  • Clinical instruction for a group of up to 8 students is provided in institutional or community settings one or two days per week depending on the clinical course. Clinical instruction involves selecting appropriate client assignments, and supervising, and instructing students as they provide client care during the clinical day. Pre and post-conferences are conducted each day. Clinical instruction includes ongoing and summative evaluation of student progress during the clinical experience. The instructor is typically on his/her feet and walking for most of the clinical day, which can be up to 8 hours long.
  • Collaborate with course faculty, program coordinators, and the Program Director to establish annual goals for simulation/lab development that support the nursing program and enhance student learning.
  • Assist the faculty, coordinators, and/or Program Director with lab initiatives, research, and curricular projects.
  • Submit written and verbal reports to the nursing Program Director at the conclusion of each semester.
  • Establish and maintain policies, processes, and procedures to guide student learning and use of laboratory spaces.
  • Serve as liaison between faculty in the practical nursing program and associate degree program options.
  • Communicate with faculty to ensure consistency of lab activities that are aimed at meeting student learning needs.
  • Monitor the communication process between referring faculty and lab faculty with regard to lab referrals (tutoring) to ensure faculty have adequate information to provide targeted tutoring and clinical faculty receives timely feedback regarding student progress towards meeting learning outcomes.
  • Provide lab tours to prospective students and visitors as requested and promote a positive image of lab facilities.
  • Integrate Nurse of the Future Competencies throughout the simulation/lab curriculum to align with the programmatic student learning outcomes and national standards established for entry into practice.
  • Program/develop simulation applications and scenarios in coordination with nursing curriculum outcomes.
  • Assist in the development of clinical and lab simulation student guidelines and related documents.
  • Facilitate resource allotment (faculty, supplies, equipment, time) to support student learning.
  • Maintain laboratory environment to assure lab security, cleanliness, organization, and safety.
  • Monitor lab equipment and perform routine assessments including preventive maintenance to ensure proper functionality.
  • Operate, repair, calibrate, and program high-fidelity simulation equipment.
  • Ensure the lab contains necessary equipment and supplies to enable faculty to utilize the lab effectively for teaching activities.
  • Establish and maintain policies and procedures to guide student and faculty use of laboratory spaces.
  • Coordinate and request the purchase of supplies and equipment.
  • Receive, audit, and store supplies in designated locations, and update lab directories.
  • Identify new technologies, then receive input from faculty and submit recommendations to the Program Director regarding integration into lab activities.
  • Develop a laboratory-teaching schedule each semester, in collaboration with the associate degree program.
  • Orient and train faculty and students in laboratory skills, simulation, and lab equipment.
  • Collaborate with Program Coordinator and Program Director regarding lab staffing.

Job Requirements:
  • Compliance with Massachusetts Board of Nursing Regulations 244CMR 6.04(2)(b, c)
  • Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse license in good standing
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum of two years of full-time experience in nursing, or its equivalent, within the last five years at the date of hire
  • Nursing skills and laboratory teaching experience using simulation technology, within the last five years, at the collegiate level
  • Experience with equity-minded work and working with individuals of diverse identities such as socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, and veterans, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.
  • Experience in collaborative work environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced practice (CNE/SIM) certification
  • Membership in professional organizations     
  • Bilingual skills a plus

Please note, the faculty rank of Assistant Professor may be subject to change in accordance with Article XVII of the MCCC Collective Bargaining Agreement.
