Position Summary:

The University of Dayton School of Law invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor and Assistant Director for Zimmerman Law Library Public Services (one position). The Law Library is located in the heart of the School of Law located in Keller Hall, a spacious facility constructed for state-of-the-art technology on the University of Dayton's beautiful residential campus. The primary responsibilities of this position, which reports to the Director of the Law Library, are the supervision, organization, implementation, and development of Law Library public services intended to satisfy the legal information and resource needs of Law Library patrons, including circulation and access services, research and reference services, instruction, and outreach. The responsibilities of the position also include teaching within the Law School curriculum, as assigned by the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. The position offers opportunities for supervisory participation in social, service, cultural, intellectual, and leadership programs designed to enhance the educational experience and involvement of law students. This is a 12-month tenure-track Law Library Faculty position, with an anticipated start date of May 15, 2024. To earn tenure in this position a Masters degree in (Library Science, MLS, etc.), excellent librarianship, and service is required.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or international equivalent
  • Working knowledge of traditional and emerging academic legal education practices and operations
  • Instructional experience,
    • such as for-credit classroom teaching
    • presentations in courses offered for credit
    • presentations in voluntary, supplementary instructional program.
  • If master's degree is not yet completed or not currently enrolled, planned enrollment in a master’s degree program from a school accredited by the American Library Association, with degree completion anticipated within 3 years of commencement of employment
  • Excellent written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited institution (at the time of application)
  • Successful experience in one or more of the following:
    • Interacting with law schools and academic law libraries
    • Classroom teaching
    • Legal practice
    • Interacting both independently and as part of a collaborative team with faculty, staff, and a growing culturally diverse campus population
    • Supervision of others in a professional environment
    • Planning, initiating, and implementing projects and services
    • Effective engagement, teaching, mentoring, and/or advising students of socially and culturally diverse backgrounds
    • Development of and fostering collaboration with various Law Library constituencies, including law students, faculty, and staff, University students, faculty, and staff, and members of the Dayton legal community
    • Use of online legal databases and research platforms such as Lexis and Westlaw
    • Organizational budgeting
  • Interest in professional development and advancement
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective oral communication skills
  • Effective classroom management skills
  • Commitment to the breadth of education including educating the whole person in the Marianist tradition to support the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion and a commitment of service to the community, university and profession
