SUMMARY:

The Assistant Professor - Agricultural Education (Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication) will help develop and implement a high quality agricultural education curriculum for undergraduate and graduate students. This is a nine-month appointment, with the opportunity for summer employment, that will serve the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) in a tenure-track faculty position. Primary responsibility will be teaching, research, and service, as needed by CASNR, by the university, and as required by accreditation agencies. The successful candidate will be expected to teach online and face-to-face undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise teaching interns, provide leadership and mentorship for graduate students, advise students regarding course and career choices, and assist and provide leadership for CASNR with FFA and 4-H service activities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (15 or less):

  • Provide instructional, programmatic, and assessment to ensure an effective program in Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication.
  • Provide an atmosphere for teaching and collaboration with the faculty and students within CASNR and at A&M-Commerce.
  • Teach courses related to Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication.
  • Advise students in Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication.
  • Communicate with external stakeholders (high school teachers, administrators, county AgriLife Extension personnel, Texas FFA staff, etc…) to promote CASNR and A&M-Commerce.
  • Facilitate FFA LDE and CDE contests as hosted by the university.
  • Attend and facilitate student involvement with District, Area, and State FFA and 4-H events.
  • Coordinate the undergraduate and graduate student teacher preparation program in CASNR.
  • Conduct research, including submission of grant proposals, securing of external research funding, presentation of findings at regional and national conferences, and publication of peer-reviewed research articles in Agricultural Leadership, Education, and/or Communication.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Ph.D. in Agricultural Education or closely related field.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

    Current Texas teacher certification to teach agriculture at the secondary level, or ability to retain such within the first year of hire.

    A minimum of three years of experience teaching agriculture at the secondary level.

    Excellent ability to communicate effectively (written and spoken English).

    Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

    Ability to teach related subject in the field of agricultural leadership, education, and/or communication

  • Ability to: Multi-task and work well as part of a team.
  • Licensing/Professional Certifications: Valid driver’s license

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

  • Professional experience in Agricultural Leadership, Education, and/or Communication.
  • Higher education teaching experience as instructor of record and beyond the graduate student level.
  • Previous experience with online instruction.
  • Experience in grant writing, publishing peer-reviewed articles, and delivery of research presentations.
  • Leadership experience with FFA, 4-H, or other agriculture youth activities.
