Position Summary:

A-State’s Department of Mathematics & Statistics invites applications for a 9-month position at the Assistant Professor level beginning August 16, 2024. The courses offered in the department include general education and service courses as well as courses that support the following degree programs:
• Actuarial Science, B.S.
• Mathematics, B.S.
• Mathematics, B.S.E.
• Mathematics, M.S.
• Statistics, M.S.
• Mathematics, M.S.E.
We also offer undergraduate minors in mathematics and statistics, certificates in undergraduate statistics and graduate statistics, and a Ph.D. Minor in Statistics
The department’s teaching and research activities cover a broad range of topics. The department teaches undergraduate and graduate statistics courses that support many degree programs on campus. Since the M.S. Statistics degree is a relatively new degree (began Fall 2020), there are opportunities to design and teach new courses with applications and methodologies that complement faculty research areas. Faculty are expected to maintain an active research agenda and collaborate with other departments. Candidates should have a strong potential to obtain external funding
Faculty participate in a team environment that supports and implements strategies for curriculum development, continuous improvement and assessment of student learning, and excellence in teaching. Tenure-track faculty also conduct research and seek external funding. The faculty have a responsibility to set degree requirements, to assess when these requirements are met, and to establish and maintain curricula that meet professional standards and fulfill the educational goals of the University


Duties & Responsibilities:

Our faculty are devoted to teaching, maintaining strong research programs, and actively participating in local and national professional societies in statistics and/or mathematics. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics and (if applicable) undergraduate courses in mathematics. In addition to teaching, all faculty participate in curriculum development and student advising.  Faculty assist the department with administrative and committee work and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. Faculty members teach, mentor, oversee student research, and advise a diverse student body. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Regular, reliable attendance on campus
  • Alignment with the university mission, vision and strategic goals
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with other instructors, answer inquiries, and interact with significant and influential individuals
  • Works with minimal supervision
  • Complies with department, college, and university policies
  • Other job duties/responsibilities may be assigned


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of general practice
Demonstrated ability in teaching
Ability to establish and implement a scholarly agenda
Ability to interact professionally and collegially with students, faculty, and all members of the A-State community
