Position Description Summary:
The Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences in the Milken Institute School of Public Health at The George Washington University (GWSPH) is recruiting an Assistant or Associate Professor with expertise in exercise science or kinesiology or related field of study for a non-tenure track position (renewable, 12-month appointment). The position can begin as early as July 1, 2024.
GWSPH has a diverse and growing faculty. As the only school of public health in the nation’s capital, faculty and students have a unique opportunity to work closely with government agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration, as well as the numerous non-governmental, non-profit, and nutrition advocacy organizations headquartered in D.C. GWSPH faculty are strongly committed to teaching, research, and service. Faculty are active in their fields and bring unique experience and connections to the classroom. Location in the nation’s capital allows students to step outside the classroom and experience first-hand how public health works in the real world.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary responsibilities for the position are teaching and mentoring undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Exercise Science Program. The candidate may also be asked to contribute to teaching in the graduate programs (MS in Exercise Physiology/Strength & Conditioning, MPH in Physical Activity and/or the PhD in Exercise Physiology and Applied Nutrition programs). Specific teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate and graduate courses in kinesiology, biomechanics, anatomy & physiology, exercise physiology, strength & conditioning, and/or sport injury & rehabilitation. Teaching will also include mentoring students on independent studies, undergraduate/graduate research, departmental honors, and/or culminating experience projects. The candidate is expected to pursue scholarly research activity related to their field of specialization and the acquisition of extramural research funding is encouraged. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to contribute academic service to the Department, School, and University.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have: 1) an earned doctorate (or those ABD at the time of application must be awarded their degree prior to the start of the position and no later than September 1, 2024) in exercise science or kinesiology or related field; 2) undergraduate and/or graduate teaching experience in kinesiology, biomechanics, anatomy & physiology, exercise physiology, and/or sport & injury rehabilitation, 3) demonstrated excellence in teaching as demonstrated by course evaluations, 4) a demonstrated well-rounded background in Kinesiology and Physiology allowing for versatility in meeting the needs of the BS in Exercise Science program in addition to the MS, MPH, and PhD programs in Exercise & Nutrition Sciences, and 5) at least one year of experience involving applied work or conducting research related to exercise science, kinesiology, biomechanics, or related field during or following the completion of their doctorate; 6) Relevant publications in peer-reviewed journals; and, 7) evidence of (or potential for) obtaining independent, external research funding in areas of scholarly interest.
