The Construction and Operations Management (COM) department at South Dakota State University is looking for an exceptional individual to fill a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor role in Construction Management, starting in August 2024. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 9 Month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.  
 
The COM department finds its home within the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, one of the eight colleges at South Dakota State University. The vision of the College is to be a nationally recognized, regionally relevant, student-centered, and accessible land-grant college, and achieve the university’s mission of providing a rigorous, practical education oriented toward problem-solving, conducting world-class regionally relevant research, and providing technical assistance to existing and emerging business, industry and government.  
 
The Bachelor of Science program in construction management is ABET accredited and is currently enjoying new and renovated facilities and strong ties to its regional constituents. Within the COM department, this program boasts a vibrant enrollment of around 160 students, supported by a dedicated team of 12 full-time faculty members. But that’s not all—our commitment extends further, with over 300 students enrolled across two associate degree programs, four undergraduate degree programs, and two graduate programs. It’s a thriving ecosystem where knowledge meets opportunity, shaping the next generation of industry leaders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses.
  • (construction surveying & lab, construction structures and analysis, applied mechanics, construction safety, and building methods).
  • Conducting research in construction engineering & management and developing externally funded research programs.
  • Recruiting, mentoring, and advising undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Establishing a strong collaboration with departmental faculty and performing multidisciplinary research.
  • Publishing the results of research in peer refereed archival journals. 
  • Serving as an active member of the technical community and participate in relevant professional and technical society activities.
  • Providing leadership and service to the Department, College, and University.
  • Pursuing scholarly, technology (Autodesk Civil 3D, Autodesk Revit, Primavera P6, MS Project, Autodesk Navisworks, SAGE, BlueBeam or other relevant industry standard software), and professional activities that will keep him/her at the leading edge of his/her field.  
  • Other duties assigned by the Department Head.

SALARY RANGE:
The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays.  Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ph.D. degree in construction management, construction engineering, civil engineering, or a closely related field completed by the first day of employment. 
  • Have at least one earned degree at any level in Construction Management or Construction Engineering or can provide evidence of teaching coursework at an ABET or ACCE or equivalent accredited program.
  • Ability or potential to teach and or perform research in two or more of the following areas: construction structures and analysis, applied mechanics, construction surveying, construction safety, building methods, building information modeling, estimating and scheduling.
  • Ability or potential for effective research, including publications in multiple peer reviewed journals.
  • Ability or potential for securing extramural funding in order to establish an independent applied research program.
  • Ability or potential to teach at the collegiate level. 
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Effective teaching in relevant courses.
  • Relevant domestic construction related experience or knowledge of regional construction industry practices. 
  • Membership and activity in relevant professional organizations. 
  • Experience with relevant industry standard software.
