The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences (https://geoearth.charlotte.edu/ ) is a diverse community of physical, geospatial, and social scientists composed of over 35 faculty members, 400 undergraduate majors, and 60 graduate students. Our current mission is to inspire discovery of the Earth and its inhabitants with a vision for an informed and diverse community that strives for a sustainable Earth and an equitable world. We create and disseminate knowledge of the Earth’s human and natural systems to adapt to an ever-changing environment in which we live, work, and interact. The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Meteorology (BS), Earth and Environmental Sciences (BS), Geology (BS), Geography (BA/BS), and Environmental Studies (BA). At the graduate level, we offer an MS in Earth Sciences, an MA and PhD in Geography, and regularly participate in the interdisciplinary Infrastructure and Environmental Systems (INES), Public Policy (PPOL) PhD programs and the Master’s in Urban Design (MUD). The Department is also home to the Center for Applied Geographic Information Science (CAGIS, https://gis.charlotte.edu/ ) and the Charlotte Action Research Project (CHARP, https://charp.charlotte.edu/ ). Some departmental faculty also contribute to the School of Data Science, which offers a BS degree in Data Science and two MS degrees in Data Science & Business Analytics and Health Informatics & Analytics. Description of Work

Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences in the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track appointment (Assistant Professor or Associate Professor) in the area of Geospatial Health Analysis. We are seeking a dynamic and broadly trained geospatial health scientist whose expertise focuses on health disparities, challenges and/or solutions from a geographic perspective. This position will begin on August 15, 2024.
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate their ability (1) to contribute to the department’s undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. focus areas in geography, urban and regional analysis, human-environment interactions, and geographic information science and/or geospatial health; (2) to build a cutting-edge, externally funded research program in geospatial health analysis; (3) to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration; and (4) to effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses in geography, geographic information science, and/or their area of specialization. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level are encouraged to demonstrate how their academic and/or professional experience have prepared them for sustainable success in the above four areas. Applicants at the Associate Professor level should demonstrate a record of sustained excellence in the above four areas. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage students of different ages, races, ethnicities, backgrounds, identities, and abilities, helping to remove barriers in order to ensure the success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university.
Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
Requirements for this position include a Ph.D. degree in Geography, Geographic Information Science, Urban Planning, a health-related field, or another discipline related to geospatial health analysis, awarded by the date of appointment.
