Job Summary

Nine months, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor with responsibility in Citrus Horticulture. This position carries an appointment of 75% Research and 25% Teaching.

Responsibilities

The position will develop an innovative research program, teaching and outreach to advance the science and practice of citrus production and sustainable horticulture, including organic citriculture. The incumbent will develop and maintain an extramurally funded and nationally recognized program that will include development of sustainable citrus production practices, training programs for students, growers and affiliated industry partners; develop digital and printed production guides and outreach publications; and foster relationships with growers and industry leaders to optimize program impacts. This position will manage research and outreach responsibilities relevant to citrus production in Texas and beyond. The successful candidate is expected to publish his/her work in peer-reviewed journals and teach graduate and undergraduate courses related to citrus production and grove management using traditional and distance-education methods.

Minimal Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Science, Soil and Crop Water Management or related field of study from a regionally accredited institution. Broad knowledge and prior experience in applied agronomy/horticulture research in fruit tree production. Candidates are expected to possess, or be willing to develop knowledge and skills related to citrus production in subtropical environments. The individual should demonstrate the ability to develop strong record of scholarly achievement, ability to obtain external funding, and to communicate effectively. Commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and student mentoring. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a diverse and multidisciplinary team and possess strong interpersonal skills. Commitment to high standards of academic professionalism and ability to handle multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

Research experience with citrus horticulture and an understanding of citrus crop production are highly desirable. Experience teaching and/or mentoring student in academic setting.

The Department: The Citrus Center at TAMUK offers a stimulating intellectual environment and has an excellent reputation in teaching, research and outreach. The center has well equipped laboratories of entomology, plant physiology, plant pathology and molecular biology, and is close to the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension centers, USDA-APHIS-PPQ (20 miles away) and the main TAMUK campus (100 miles away). The location offers large and dynamic multidisciplinary, multi-agency facilities with strong research, extension, teaching activities, and access to multiple well-equipped research farms. Opportunities for interdisciplinary and interagency interactions are outstanding and collaborative activities with colleagues at the center and in other departments at TAMUK, institutions and agencies are expected and encouraged.
