SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences (DEOS) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School for Marine Science and Technology in New Bedford, MA, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Marine Science at the Assistant/Associate Professor level beginning in September 2024. Research areas of particular interest include:

  • Ocean and Climate Observations
  • Ocean and Climate Large Data Set Analysis and Modelling
  • Marine / Coastal Biogeochemistry
  • Oceanographic Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis
  • The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as mentoring students. They will also be expected to secure and maintain a robust extramurally funded research program. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in departmental and university service.

    Faculty in the Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences pursue state-of-the-art basic and applied marine science research as well as quality graduate education, with strong interdisciplinary emphasis and high priority placed on the development of innovative approaches and technologies, and the training of the next generation of marine scientists for academia, government, and the private sector. The present hire is part of a new phase of growth for DEOS and SMAST overall. The Department offers MS and PhD degrees in Marine Science including a Dual-Degree PhD program with University of Sao Paulo, Brazil as well as a Professional Science Master.     The School of Marine Science and Technology is the lead marine campus in the University of Massachusetts System with over 100 faculty, staff, and students. Situated in southeastern coastal Massachusetts, SMAST hosts nearly 100,000 square feet of marine facilities in the South End of New Bedford, MA including a marine pier with observing assets, a more than 6,000 sq. ft. seawater laboratory, a 96,000-gallon acoustic-optic test tank, a marine biodegradability laboratory, and state-of-art conference facilities.

    DUTIES

    The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program in an area of strategic interest to DEOS; teach and advise undergraduate and graduate (MS & PhD) students; contribute to university and professional service; and foster interdisciplinary collaborations.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

    EDUCATION:  Candidates must hold at the time of appointment an earned Ph.D. in a Marine Science, Oceanography, or a closely related field.

    EXPERIENCE: Candidates must have a record of research accomplishment through publication in peer reviewed journals and participation in externally funded research projects commensurate with years since PhD. The level of appointment (Assistant or Associate Professor) will be determined at the time of hire based on the candidate's teaching experience as well as research accomplishments as compared with the tenure and promotion criteria in the area of Scholarship and Professional Development for DEOS.

    OTHER: Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, mentorship, and scholarly accomplishments, as well as a capability to build a strong research program with extramural support.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:  Background and experience in a marine-related research area of strategic interest to the DEOS.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  A track record of successful grant proposal submission and funding as a principal investigator. A track record of course development and student mentorship. Strong written and oral communication skills. A demonstrated ability to be a productive member of a research collaboration.
