Assistant or Associate Professor – Emerging Construction Technologies

The University of Houston’s Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design (CoAD), in partnership with the Department of Construction Management (CM) in the Cullen College of Engineering (CCE), invites applicants for an Assistant or Associate Professor in Emerging Construction Technologies. This is a cross-college proposal for a Presidential Frontier Faculty hire within the Sustainable Communities and Infrastructure thrust. The CoAD has recently invested in developing two labs – The Construction Robotics and Fabrication Technologies (CRAFT) Lab and the Keeland Design Exploration Lab – that are strategically coordinated to become national leaders for design innovation in the areas of advanced construction automation, sustainable building fabrication, and circular material research.  This position seeks to broaden the impact of these labs and the two programs through synergistic collaborations between faculty, students, and industry partners. 

Candidates should have demonstrated expertise in design, automation/autonomy, and sustainable construction materials. These areas align with UH’s Sustainable Infrastructure and Smart Cities research priorities.  Specifically, the hire would work with the two labs of the CoAD and CM-CCE to develop construction automation projects using various sustainable materials such as 3D printed earthen materials and recycled plastics, carbon-negative timber assemblies, and lightweight composite structures. Candidates should have both practical experience with emerging construction technologies as well as the capacity to integrate these technologies into the curriculum through innovative teaching.  

The tenure-track/tenured position is split between Architecture (75%) and Engineering (25%). This joint position is designed to foster new collaborations between faculty, students, and external industry partners to advance our efforts toward realizing more sustainable construction practices in developing our cities and communities.  

The Presidential Frontier Faculty (PFF) program is a university-wide integrated interdisciplinary faculty hiring campaign supported by President Renu Khator, the Office of the Provost, and the Division of Research. The program encompasses hiring a large cohort of convergence research faculty to respond to federal priorities and societal challenges. UH holds faculty in the PFF Program to the highest standards and supports them with significant start-up funding, mentoring programs, and extensive training. PFF faculty will be intensively trained in proposal development and writing at the highest level.
