WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY FILM STUDIES DEPARTMENT invites applications for an
Assistant or Associate Professor position with an emphasis on Black Cinemas beginning
July 1, 2023. We seek colleagues with disciplinary interests in archival research and film
form whose scholarship addresses the lived experiences and cultural contributions of
communities of color. Areas of specialization might include (but are not restricted to)
African American, African Diaspora cinemas. We welcome scholars also working in
Asian-Pacific-American, Latinx, Native American, and/or Queer cinema and media as
well as those working comparatively across these specializations, or combining the study
of U.S. race and media with transnational and intersectional approaches. Scholars with filmmaking experience welcome.
Successful candidates will join a distinguished undergraduate major with fifty years of
achievement and over 400 alumni working throughout the film and television industries.
The Department is part of Wesleyan’s College of Film and the Moving Image. Our
curriculum unifies media studies with production in a liberal-arts setting and emphasizes
audience-centered artistic practice. Strong consideration will be given to the teaching
records of candidates and the willingness to participate in the ongoing curricular growth,
diversification and decolonization of our program. Teaching load is two courses per
semester at introductory and specialized levels. Candidates are also expected to contribute to the department curriculum. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, carrying on a program of research or creative production, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in film studies or related field in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the Ph.D. in film studies or related field within one year of hire.
