Assistant or Associate Director of Development - School of Architecture

UVA’s Office of University Advancement seeks candidates for an Assistant or Associate Director of Development. The Assistant/Associate Director will represent the University of Virginia, its programs, policies, personnel, traditions, philosophy, and objectives to all constituent groups. The Assistant/Associate Director will generate philanthropic support for the School of Architecture as part of the Honor the Future   campaign. The Assistant/Associate Director will report to the Director of Development and will focus on fundraising efforts to support programs related to the priorities of the A-School. The Assistant/Associate Director will be responsible for managing a portfolio of donor prospects and developing a comprehensive solicitation and stewardship strategy.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to build and manage a portfolio of current and prospective major-gift level donors ($100K+) and move them towards giving levels that achieve annual and long-range fundraising goals of the University. The Assistant/Associate Director will be expected to create personalized strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individuals within their portfolio. Other responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising plan to include special events, communications, annual campaigns, and major gift strategies.

  • Travelling nationally to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects.

  • Collaborating with other fundraisers in the department and across the University in overall relationship building of alumni, parents, and friends to ensure a coordinated approach for prospects and donors and to develop and implement cultivation and solicitation plans.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • At least three years of related experience for Assistant Director/ Five years of fundraising experience for the Associate Director level.

  • A valid driver's license and the ability to travel nationally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Exceptional communication skills, a high degree of personal integrity and the ability to keep the big picture in focus while attending to the small details.

  • Demonstrated success cultivating high-level relationships.

  • Experience using data to evaluate and plan.

  • Experience in higher education development with a track record of closing five-figure (Assistant) or six-figure (Associate) figure gifts.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs. The successful candidate must be able to travel frequently domestically and be available for occasional evening and weekend work.

Depending on the type of position and work performed, or as deemed by manager, some positions may be required to work intermittently in a shared office space located in Charlottesville, Virginia.

This position will remain open until filled. This is an Exempt level, benefited position.

This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: $60K - $67K for Assistant Director or $70K - $77K for Associate Director, commensurate with education and experience. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
