Job Summary

Involves the provision of integrated and accessible primary and specialty patient care services in a clinic or center environment. Care is provided by clinicians and assistants who are accountable for addressing a large majority of personal health care needs and developing a sustainable partnership with patients. Ensures optimal patient outcomes through effective leadership and / or provision of patient care delivery in healthcare clinics or centers. Promotes shared decision-making at all levels to ensure a shared voice in practices, exchange of ideas, enhanced communication, and continually improved patient services. Management levels may also be responsible for clinic operations.

Guided by the policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services Administration, and in collaboration with providers and other clinical staff, the Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for providing safe, efficient nursing care to patients in an out-patient, primary care practice. Incumbent triages patients and responds appropriately according to protocol and nursing assessment. The Assistant Nurse Manager utilizes the nursing process (Assessment, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation) to provide safe and therapeutic clinical care. The Assistant Nurse Manager also provides clinical support to providers and participates as part of the health care team to assure coordination and continuity of patient care. They participate in the development and implementation of educational programs and materials for patients and their family members. They deliver direct patient care to a variety of patient populations. All components of nursing care will be individualized to meet the patient’s physiological and psychosocial development.

The Assistant Nurse Manager will play a critical role in the patient experience including optimizing clinic flow, providing in and outreach to patients and working collaboratively with the team to create a patient centered environment. They participate in Performance Improvement (PI) activities. They are required to learn and apply the Patient Centered Medical Home Standards and to maintain a safe environment for patients. The Assistant Nurse Manager consistently projects a professional and courteous demeanor, help establish and maintain the highest service standards for the practice and complies with the Medical Center House and Telephone Standards. This employee will utilize computer skills in APeX and other UCSF computerized programs.

Department Description

Primary care at UCSF Health is delivered through ambulatory clinics located in strategic outposts throughout the city of San Francisco. Primary Care Services clinics. Women’s Health Primary Care Clinic (WHPC): includes internal and family medicine specialists, and nurse practitioners with expertise in caring for women. The providers perform various procedures including Intrauterine Device Insertion and Removal, Nexplanon Insertion and Removals.


Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in a clinical setting with 2 years in a lead/supervisory capacity      
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing
  • Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • Active American Heart Association BLS Certification
  • Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise clinicians and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a clinic(s) / center(s). Strong knowledge of practice operations.       
  • In depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations, and internal policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  •  Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaborations and problem solving with all levels of management, staff, consultants, and outside agencies.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, and to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Strong knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in clinic / center patient care.
  • The ability to work well in a stressful environment while handling multiple tasks.
  • The ability to work independently.
  • The ability to prioritize multiple tasks, while providing the highest quality of customer service.

License/Certification

  • Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • Active American Heart Association BLS Certification
