Position Summary
This position provides support for McKelvey Engineering by managing shared infrastructure including building-installed laboratory equipment and resources. Position requires ability to train staff, consult with faculty, and direct maintenance and repairs. This position will report to the Manager of Laboratory Operations, Safety, and Protocols, and will be involved in assisting with identification and management of shared laboratory research equipment information and logistics as well as assist with maintaining safe and efficient lab operations throughout the School.


Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Equipment Management and Maintenance:

  • Monitor usage, and supervise McKelvey students and employees on laboratory equipment associated with infrastructure and research support, including autoclaves, glass washes, ice machines, etc.
  • Develop and implement maintenance programs on McKelvey equipment (involves troubleshooting problems, purchasing supplies, and contacting vendors as necessary for service and repairs).
  • Establish record keeping systems for maintenance and usage of McKelvey equipment and resources.
  • Attend meetings as needed with Facilities Management, as well as sales and technical reps.

Resource Management and Maintenance:

  • Monitor usage, and supervise McKelvey students and employees on resources associated with infrastructure and research support, including di/RO water supply, liquid nitrogen, biological waste disposal, and environmental rooms.
  • Coordinate with University facilities and housekeeping as necessary for autoclave rooms, environmental rooms, and loading dock improvements and maintenance.
  • Responsible for supervision of various research groups’ usage of environmental rooms and shared instrument and equipment spaces to maintain adherence to McKelvey policies and procedures, as well as local and federal regulations.
  • Monitor and maintain di/RO water systems for multiple building occupants.
  • Monitor and procure as necessary liquid nitrogen supply.

Research Support:

  • Create and manage a log of shared equipment available to researchers within the School, in order to prevent unnecessary expenditures and prevent duplication of equipment. In addition, this position will keep a log of equipment and vendors which have proved reliable and at minimum, meet or exceed expectations.
  • Consult faculty on the implementation of shared resources to support their research.
  • Consult with research students, staff, and faculty to develop lab-specific protocols regarding usage of McKelvey shared equipment.
  • Develop, implement, and keep records of biohazard waste disposal program for the School in accordance with Environmental Health and Safety standards.
  • Prepare and package lab materials and items for shipping in compliance with IATA (Int’l Air Transportation Assoc.), DOT and other regulatory requirements, using knowledge and training required to be a certified (requires periodic offsite training to maintain certification) shipper of chemicals, biological, and hazardous materials. 
  • Serve as the main point of contact for freight deliveries of research equipment.

Training:

  • Develop and implement orientations and training programs for shared laboratory equipment and other resources associated with infrastructure and research support for incoming students, staff, and Faculty.
  • Conduct meetings and training sessions with existing laboratory students, staff, and Faculty to provide continuing education on safe and effective policies and procedures surrounding shared equipment and resources.
  • Manage movement and/or disposal of research equipment.
  • Regularly meet with McKelvey’s undergraduate student groups to ensure they are maintaining safe and efficient lab operations in School owned spaces.

McKelvey Engineering Support

  • Maintain lab signage in accordance with departmental standards and Environmental Health and Safety requirements.
  • Provide support at the dock for various vendors, service technicians, movers, etc.
  • Provide necessary assistance in all lab and office moves.
  • Help manage an inventory for excess lab and office furnishings, lab equipment, etc.
  • Attend trainings for Emergency Preparedness Coordinator.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S. in life sciences or engineering-related major.
  • Three years of related work experience.
  • Familiarity/comfort with lab function and organization.
  • General lab equipment knowledge; knowledge of working with scientific equipment; and general knowledge of laboratory experimental processes and procedures.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to maintain complete and organized records.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in life science or engineering-related field and five years of experience, or master’s degree in life science or engineering-related field and three years of experience.

Salary Range
$47,300.00 - $78,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
