Description of Work Unit

Colorado State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Learning Specialist for Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS). The performance of student-athletes in their sports is one measure of their success. Equally, if not more important, is the academic achievement of student-athletes in the classroom and their overall University experience. The mission of SASS is to help student-athletes become independent and self-reliant learners. In an environment that promotes student-athlete development, the staff provides support for all student-athletes from the time they arrive on campus for a recruiting visit until they graduate. The staff provides resources, experience, and knowledge empowering each student-athlete to reach his/her academic and personal potential.
Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) is part of the Division of Student Affairs, and reports directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs in close collaboration with Athletics. Working with all departments across the Institution, the Division of Student Affairs at Colorado State University encompasses a wide array of departmental services and programs addressing the needs of a student body of approximately 33,000.
Colorado State University is located in Fort Collins, a city of 151,000. Located 65 miles north of Denver, the city is nestled against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and alongside the banks of the Cache La Poudre River. Fort Collins offers the convenience of a small town with the amenities of a larger city including a strong public school system, various recreational opportunities, cultural offerings, and dining venues. Residents experience a moderate 4-season climate with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year.

Position Summary

This position is a one year internship where the successful candidate will work as an Assistant Learning Specialist. In this role, the Assistant Learning Specialist will get a range of experiences in preparation for both learning specialist and tutor coordinator roles by assisting with execution, management, assessment, and development of both Learning Resources and tutoring services. Evening study hall monitoring and some weekend work is required.

Required Job Qualifications

• Master’s degree in area of education, psychology, counseling, student affairs/services, social work, or related field
• At least one academic year of experience in collegiate athletics, special education, counseling, and/or teaching
• Attention to detail
• Excellent written communication skills
• Strong organizational skills
• Demonstrated direct experience working with diverse populations (i.e. race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, class, religion, ability, etc.)

Preferred Job Qualifications

• General knowledge of education-impacting disorders, related assessments, and/or experience with IEPs/504 Plans
• Interest in pursuing a career in student-athlete support services with particular interest in pursuit of a learning specialist role
• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and meet established work deadlines
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
• Experience with student information systems such as DARS, Banner, GradesFirst/EAB, etc.

• Meet with a caseload of student-athletes to promote academic skill development, realistic goal setting, self-assessment, and self-advocacy, including utilization of assistive technology and accommodations if applicable
• Assist the Learning Specialist with development of individualized learning plans, including risk assessment review
• Development and facilitation of academic workshops
• Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, and management of Learning Resource staff
• Partner with the Learning Specialist to assess and adjust Learning Resources services as needed

• Manage matching, scheduling, and day-to-day logistics for tutor sessions
• Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, and management of tutor staff
• Partner with the Learning Specialist to assess and adjust tutoring services as needed
