Description

The Humanities Division at the University of Chicago, in collaboration with Etxepare Institute, is accepting applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Assistant Instructional Professor position in Basque and Spanish expected to start on September 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter. The initial appointment is for two years and is renewable up to two additional years upon successful review. The Assistant Instructional Professor will be assigned to the Basque and Spanish language programs in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. Responsibilities will include teaching 7 language courses per year (distributed in three quarters), of which 5 will be in Basque language and culture. The position also includes service related to the Basque language program, such as co-curricular activities and outreach. All Instructional Professors are expected to engage in regular professional development.

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union.

Position is contingent upon budgetary approval.


Qualifications

Minimum requirements include an advanced degree (MA or PhD), preferably in a field related to Basque Studies, and academic proficiency (CEFRL C1, ACTFL Advanced High, or equivalent) in Basque, English, and Spanish. Previous teaching experience at the college level and specialized training in second language teaching or acquisition is also highly desirable. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their language proficiency via certification or in the interview process.

  • a 15-20 minute teaching video of a remote or in-person language class (if no recording of the candidate's teaching is available, a mock-class video is also acceptable),
  • contact information for three references.
