Description

The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the Divinity School of the University of Chicago invite applications for a position as Assistant Instructional Professor to teach courses in Classical Arabic and the Islamic Studies curriculum. The selected candidate will typically teach 3 courses per year in Classical Arabic and 3 courses per year in the Islamic Studies curriculum and will also be assigned service responsibilities related to these programs. All Instructional Professors are expected to engage in regular professional development. The review-and-progression schedule is determined by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union.

The appointment will begin on October 1, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The initial term of appointment will be for two or three years depending on prior experience, with reappointment possible following successful review. Qualifications

Applicants are required to have at least one year of previous experience teaching Classical Arabic or topics in Islamic Studies at the college or post-secondary level. An M.A. degree or equivalent is required. A Ph.D. in a related field is desirable.
