GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Illinois Institute of Technology’s Office of General Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice and representation to the University, and to faculty and staff acting in their roles as representatives of the University. This Assistant General Counsel position reports directly to the General Counsel and must work independently on a wide range of complex and novel topics. Ideally, the Assistant General Counsel will possess (or have the willingness to learn) the skills and ability to undertake a variety of transactional, administrative and litigation matters.

Qualifications


Education & Experience
Juris Doctor from ABA-accredited U.S. law school.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Five (5) years of progressive responsibility and experience practicing law in a law firm, corporate office, or university/college setting.
  • Experience in the fields of higher education law and contract law.
  • Litigation experience is strongly desired.
  • Experience with insurance and risk management.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to think strategically, solve problems creatively, and provide actionable advice.

Certifications and Licenses

Key Responsibilities


Key Responsibility
This Assistant General Counsel position will involve performing general legal services with an emphasis on drafting and reviewing contracts, policies, procedures and other legal documents, and providing advice to University representatives regarding same, and assisting with University compliance issues, as well as document and information requests.  Key responsibilities include:
  • Draft, review and negotiate contracts on behalf of the University involving a wide variety of complex business, academic and transactional matters, including procurement, information technology, intellectual property and licensing, construction and maintenance, insurance, finance, real estate and leasing, inter-institutional and collaboration agreements, sponsored research and projects, and gifts and bequests.
  • Take responsibility for litigation, including participating in the development of overall trial strategy, conducting legal research, preparing motions and arguments, conducting depositions, preparing University witnesses for depositions, litigating cases in state and federal courts, and representing the University in administrative hearing.
  • Respond to subpoenas, record requests and other production of documents related to students, staff and faculty as directed.
  • Review and maintain University policies, and contribute to policy development.
  • Provide advice concerning risk management and insurance coverage issues.
  • Maintain familiarity with Board policies and provide support as needed.
  • Develop and present formal and informal training on legal/compliance topics for University officials at all levels of the organization.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the General Counsel.
