Assistant General Counsel (Hybrid)

Provides legal advice and serves as in-house counsel to Strategic Education on a wide variety of matters. This role is a full-time, individual contributor role and reports to the Managing Associate General Counsel. The ideal candidate is located near our offices in Minneapolis, MN or Herndon, VA, however full consideration will be given to Remote applicants.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist with federal regulatory matters related to two accredited institutions of higher education.

  • Assist with litigation and administrative proceedings to which the company is a party.

  • Provide legal analysis and advice to administrators on policy matters, especially regulatory compliance issues.

  • Investigate legal issues and recommend action to administrators.

  • Negotiate and draft contracts: draft legal documents and policies.

  • Research federal and state legal questions.

  • Assist with general corporate matters.

  • Review university programs, procedures, and policies for legal compliance.

  • Provide legal and compliance training to in-house clients

Job Skills:

  • Excellent analytical, oral, and written communications skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Strong computer/word processing skills, including knowledge of standard Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Ability and willingness to apply independent judgment in a dynamic environment.

Work Experience:

  • At least three years of experience in the practice of law.

  • Higher education experience preferred.

  • Experience in consumer protection law preferred (in-house, government employment, or law firm).

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree and JD from an ABA-accredited law school.

Certificates, Licenses, and registrations

  • Bar admission in one or more of the following jurisdictions: Virginia, Minnesota, Maryland, or Washington, DC.

Other:

  • Must be able to travel 10% of the time.

  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.

  • Typical office setting.

  • Mobility within the office including movement from floor to floor.

  • Travel via plane, car, and metro may be required to perform this job.

  • Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs warrant.

  • Access information using a computer.

  • Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain.

  • Effectively cope with stressful situations.

  • Strong mental acuity.

  • Regular, dependable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job. 

  • Other essential functions and marginal job functions are subject to modification.
