Position Summary
This position serves as the Assistant Director for the School of Medicine FiRST program. This position will have executive advising, project management, communications, and supervisory responsibilities for the FiRST service center and will provide direction and consultation on complex financial management issues to assigned departments, school wide. The Assistant Director will participate in reviewing business processes for finance and research as well as funding issues in the SOM. This position will focus on contracts and grant reporting and will work with departments to ensure that funds are utilized correctly. This includes the analysis of financial reports, monitoring contracts and grants data, and expenditure analysis, and overseeing budget reviews for all departments and Centers. This position requires excellent problem solving, analytical thinking, decision making, customer service, negotiation and consulting skills. The work is complex and requires the preparation and execution of various budget types and all-funds budgeting across a large number of accounts and reporting formats. The Assistant Director will oversee the Business Managers who supervise budget analysts that are responsible for all financial transactions from diverse funding sources, including state, state receipts, facilities & administration, contracts & grants, gifts (endowed and expendable), and other institutional trust funds. The position exercises judgment in selecting funding sources and managing the departments’ portion of financial commitments distributed to the units annually. Using extensive knowledge of programs, concepts, and practices of the units, the Assistant Director guides, directs, and coaches unit managers and other employees regarding practices and interpretations on complex issues. She/he also identifies and resolves issues with financial mismanagement or unfavorable trends, which may include designing or modifying specific accounting procedures and/or systems. This position will assist the Director in the development, execution, evaluation and continued improvement of FiRST service center initiatives in the areas of academic funds, human resources, information technology, and financial and business operations for the School of Medicine.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to the development or administration of academic standards or curricula, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

This position requires the expertise to work independently; to diagnose a wide range of business, technical, and administrative issues; and to identify and implement solutions to those problems. The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences, as well as build relationships with a variety of partners and constituents. The incumbent must demonstrate the capacity to effectively manage multiple responsibilities of a confidential nature and exercise a high level of discretion and independent judgment.
