The Assistant Director, under general direction, is responsible for the operations and management of the Strength & Conditioning facilities, equipment, staff, and services. Provides overall direction, goals, and supervision for full-time, graduate assistant and part-time staff. Responsible for the Strength & Conditioning facilities and equipment repair coordination at the Student Recreation Center, Polo Road Recreation Center, and Southside Recreation center. Plans and administers the budget including, but not limited to, operational hours, wages, uniforms, supplies, repairs, revenue, and equipment replacement forecasting and methodology. Assists the Associate Director and Director with long-term strategies and direction of the department and Strength & Conditioning area services, programs, and capital planning. What you need to know

Salary Range: $55,412-$71,219.20 annually (commensurate to selected hire’s experience)

Position details: General office conditions with the majority of time spent in contact with students. Attends meetings and conferences concerning students and with student groups at times beyond usual working hours such as nights and weekends.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

  • Six years of strength & conditioning / weight room management, including some supervisory experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Excel, Word and Access.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Minimum of one personal training or strength and conditioning certification from a nationally accredited certification organization such as NSCA, NASM, ACSM, or ACE.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in health and kinesiology, exercise physiology, sport management, physical education or related field. 

  • Ten or more years of experience working in collegiate/university Recreational Sports/Campus Recreation managing the operations of strength and conditioning, personal training, and small group training facilities and staff in a large multi-faceted university recreational sports strength and conditioning program.

  • Broad experience with strength and cardiovascular equipment research, evaluation and purchasing, vendor relations, maintenance, and repairs.

  • High level of budget preparation, administration, and management experience. Development, implementation, and management of personal training and small group training programs.

  • Minimum of eight or more years of personal training experience with a multitude and wide range of clientele.

  • Experience presenting and speaking in both large and small group settings.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • NSCA-Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Multiple nationally accredited personal training certifications such as NSCA-CPT, NASM-CPT, ACSM-CPT, ACE-CPT. USAW certification.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good communication skills, writing skills, leadership abilities, budgetary skills, and time management.

  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, Innosoft Fusion, and When-To-Work.

  • Some experience and working knowledge of Audio Video systems and related technology.

Responsibilities

  • Facilities and Program Management - Develops policies and procedures for Rec Sports facilities and services at the Student Recreation Center, Polo Road Recreation Center, and Southside Recreation Center. Manages the operations and programs of all Strength & Conditioning areas, equipment, and services at each of the Rec Sports facilities. Serves on management team with Associate Directors and Director. Develops and coordinates the staffing methodologies, policies, procedures, and member interaction protocols. Determines equipment layout and analyzes usage data for future modifications. Directs and implements preventative maintenance and repair strategies, and assists with the determination of facility hours of operation. Monitors all Strength & Conditioning facilities security and compliance with department, university, and national standards, policies, and procedures. Oversees and guides the Personal & Small Group Training program. Provides direction for the growth strategies, advertising, promotion, direct contact, and other sales pipelines. Indirectly manages the Personal & Small Group Training Suite usage, security, equipment layout, and programming. Serves as back up to Associate Director for audio video systems related issues, concerns, and third-party vendor and repair technician communications.

  • Supervision - Supervises Strength & Conditioning Coordinator/Student Development Specialist II (1), Personal & Small Group Training Coordinator/Student Development Specialist II (1), Graduate Assistant for Strength & Conditioning and Personal Training (1), Strength & Conditioning Student Supervisors (3-4), Strength & Conditioning Head Attendants (50 – 65), Strength & Conditioning Attendants (140-180), and Powerlifting Club staff (10).  Leads search/hiring committees for national searches for filling full time and graduate assistant Strength & Conditioning area professional position openings. Responsible for the hiring, training, scheduling, evaluation, clinics, in-services, meetings, and continuing education of the staff. Indirectly supervises Personal Trainers (20) and Small Group Training Coaches (5-8).

  • Strategic Planning, Budget Development, and Implementation - Responsible for the development, preparation, and administration of the Strength & Conditioning area budget including but not limited to employee wages, uniforms, supplies, repairs, equipment, and program revenue. Performs continual analysis and projection of all budget lines items, purchases, expenses, and revenue compared to allocated budget per fiscal year. Responsible for the strategic planning for the operations of existing and future Rec Sports Strength & Conditioning facilities and personnel including but not limited to forecasting, budget planning, hiring, and preparation for opening of operations. Develops, implements, and manages the short and long term strategic plan for both capital and asset management. Organizes ongoing preventative maintenance and facility repair projects for the Strength & Conditioning spaces and equipment. Analyzes and calculates rotation of large scale maintenance projects with service providers, in-house maintenance team, and Strength & Conditioning area staff. Assists with the development, research, quotation, procurement, and logistics of long term capital equipment replacement strategy. Handles these responsibilities for Student Recreation Center, Polo Road Recreation Center, and Southside Recreation Center.

  • Department Mission Duties - Serves on national, university, divisional, and departmental committees as needed. Assists in establishing long and short-term goals of the department. Attends local, state, and national workshops and conferences; hosts and presents at various workshops. Maintains positive relationships within department, other university departments, community and vendors. Assists other university staff members as requested. Interacts with students, faculty, and staff for the benefit of carrying out the mission of the department. Performs other duties as assigned.
