Job Description

The Assistant Director of Student Recruitment assumes a crucial role within the Herberger Institute enrollment management team. This talent is pivotal in addressing Herberger Institute’s new student enrollment needs in Los Angeles. 

Responsibilities for the Assistant Director include fostering the success of Herberger Institute’s strategic enrollment initiatives in Los Angeles. This involves orchestrating recruitment activities, such as campus tours, lead generation, follow-ups, admissions events, one-on-one admissions counseling, and daily interactions with prospective students. 

The Assistant Director collaborates with other ASU team leaders to ensure seamless coverage and coordinated recruitment activities. These interdisciplinary teams collectively provide services through in-person interactions, phone communication, and electronic channels.

The Assistant Director, Student Recruitment's performance will be evaluated based on the successful execution of targeted recruitment events on and off-campus, the smooth operation of Herberger Institute new student recruitment visits and events in Los Angeles, meeting new student enrollment target, and the overall enhancement of student enrollment efforts in Los Angeles. Success in this role is synonymous with achieving excellence across these performance measures.

Under the Assistant Dean of Admissions and Enrollment’s direction, this position is responsible for coordinating and managing the Herberger Institute Office of Recruitment and Admissions, Los Angeles administrative functions to include the development and implementation of student recruitment and operations strategies.

Essential Duties

  • Serves as the primary contact for Herberger Institute prospective students, families, high school, and community college partners in Los Angeles. 
  • Assists in development, implementation and evaluation of effective recruitment strategies and tactics to meet Herberger Institute’s designated enrollment targets in Los Angeles. 
  • Maintains an active and aggressive schedule of recruitment events and visitations. 
  • Collaborates with critical ASU departments, Herberger Institute enrollment management, marketing/communication, business operations teams in Arizona and California to meet ASU new student enrollment targets in Los Angeles. 
  • Coordinates student recruitment efforts for the Herberger Institute Creative Economy Hub undergraduate programs in Los Angeles.  
  • Assists in the Herberger Institute Fashion/Film/Design club events in Los Angeles. 
  • Prepares and analyzes new student enrollment reports and documents as directed. 
  • Monitors student database and associated reports to track all student recruitment communication through Salesforce and ASU reporting tools. 
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of recruitment and marketing materials. 
  • Supervises and trains the Herberger Institute Office of Recruitment and Admissions student representatives in Los Angeles. 
  • Represents the Herberger Institute at various undergraduate recruitment events and serves on student-recruitment related planning committees. 
  • Facilitates administrative projects and work groups to support the Herberger Institute new student initiatives in California.
  • Coordinates high school and community college class visits in California.
  • Leads Herberger Institute Creative Economy Hub academic program information sessions.
  • Provides prospective students and parents with highest level of customer service through effective and timely phone, email, Zoom or face-to-face communication.
  • Conducts individual and group presentations to disseminate program information to prospective students and parents interested in the Herberger Institute Creative Economy Hub programs, including but not limited to fashion, film, and design. 
  • Collaborates with ASU Admission Services teams on Herberger Institute LA programs’ facility tours and class observation related requests. 
  • Coordinates and supports Herberger Institute’s recruitment efforts in Los Angeles and California at large. 
  • Designs and executes recruitment events both virtually and in-person with the assistance and consultation of the Assist Dean of Admissions, Enrollment and Global Outreach in the Herberger Institute and ASU Admission Services. 
  • Works with high school and community college teachers and counselors to foster relationships and recruiting opportunities.
  • Initiates ongoing correspondence with prospective students and families as well as current Herberger Institute students in Los Angeles to provide information regarding Herberger Institute degree programs, admission criteria and deadlines. 
  • Engages with prospective students and families as follow- up to recruitment endeavors via written correspondence and/or phone calls.
  • Serves as one of the Herberger Institute Dean’s Office liaisons to ASU faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the public in facilitating university and Herberger Institute programs, policies, and procedures in Los Angeles. 
  • Assists with necessary travel arrangements and itineraries relating to student recruitment.
  • Assists with the editing, production, and development of collateral materials, including but not limited to the catalog descriptions, viewbooks, student handbooks, posters, advertisements, and social media posts.
  • Travel in California for student recruitment events and activities.
  • Designs and develops training content and materials for new student recruitment team members in Los Angeles. 
  • Performs other job-related activities as assigned or apparent. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and three (3) years related experience, one (1) of which includes professional sales and/or direct marketing-related experience;OR,Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the fashion, film, media arts and sciences, or design programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public relations experience.
  • Bilingual: English/another language. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices pertaining to college student recruitment and admissions in the United States.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of marketing techniques/methods.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experiences of working with international students at the college/university level. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of management and supervisory principles and practices.
  • Experience in developing student recruitment proposals.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of databases and software such as Salesforce and PeolpleSoft to enter, track and maintain student information.
  • Experience in problem-solving and decision-making. 
  • Experience in planning, analyzing, and coordinating activities and establishing priorities. 
  • Experience in effectively managing, supervising, and evaluating assigned staff. 
  • Evidence of effective communication. 
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships in a diversified population.
  • Experience in presenting information effectively in front of large groups and with individuals.
  • Evidence in having a passionate belief in the power of arts and design education along with the desire to help and inspire creative individuals to achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Evening or weekends work may be required to promote Herberger Institute Creative Economy Hub programs during community, after-school and business events.
