Position Summary:
Villanova University’s Student Health Center, which operates 24/7, during the academic year, serves Villanova’s more than 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students, providing many of the same functions that a primary care provider offers for students when they are home. Students can expect excellent health care, individualized attention, and timely service in supporting their general health needs, sick visits, women’s health, testing, immunizations, and other health care services.
The Assistant Director for the Student Health Center will be a certified nurse practitioner and will have dual responsibilities managing the nursing staff and providing clinical care. The Assistant Director will be responsible for the supervision of and ongoing education for the Student Health Center nursing staff and will be engaged with related day-to-day administrative functions of the Student Health Center. The Assistant Director will also serve as one of the medical providers, administering high quality, comprehensive medical care with an emphasis on primary care and women’s health to undergraduate and graduate students in the outpatient and inpatient setting of the Student Health Center.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serves as a nurse practitioner responsible for delivering comprehensive medical care to undergraduate and graduate students, with an emphasis on primary care and women’s health.
  • In collaboration with the Director, provides day-to-day oversight of the Student Health Center, including supervision, support, and direction to the medical nursing staff, including multiple direct and indirect reports. Assists with the resolution of clinical and administrative issues and oversees the daily operation of the Student Health Center in the absence of the Director.
  • Provides ongoing review and evaluation of nursing clinical skills and procedures; and implements formal orientation for new nursing staff. Provides regularly scheduled clinical conferences to educate staff on best practices and current trends in medicine. Services as an administrator for Electronic Medical Records and ensures that SHC staff are appropriately EMR trained.
  • Assists with the development of evidence based clinical practice guidelines, policies and procedures, and clinical decision support tools.
  • Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and state certification as a Nurse Practitioner in Family or Adult Health.
  • Master’s degree in nursing.
  • Licensed to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
  • Remains current on continuing education credits through conferences or literature as specified by certification organization.
  • Minimum three years of recent nurse practitioner clinical experience.
  • Supervisory experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Proficiency with gynecological exams, suture removal, and phlebotomy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to engage constructively in collaborative decision-making.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team leader and team member.
  • Experience in women’s health as part of clinical practice.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for individual, community, and public health issues.
  • Possess knowledge of local and national issues, trends, and best practice standards in primary health care and college health.
  • Ability to learn new technologies.
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records.
  • Ability to use a microscope and Automatic External Defibrillator.
  • Genuinely cares about students, their well-being, and their success.
  • Appreciation for the mission and values of Villanova as an Augustinian and Catholic institution of higher education.
  • Appreciation for social justice considerations in healthcare and understanding the diversity of identities and lived experiences of students at Villanova which need to inform the delivery of excellent healthcare to our students.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience as a manager or supervisor in a higher education or student healthcare facility.
  • Proficiency with Electronic Medical Records.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
The Student Health Center interacts extensively with students, faculty, staff, and students’ family members (within the bounds of confidentiality). The Student Health Center operates 24/7 during the academic year (except on school breaks) and is a busy work environment with multiple peak periods of work activity across the calendar year. Constituents, who include students, their parents/guardians, and members of the university community, call frequently with questions or concerns that must be addressed with kindness, courtesy and accuracy.
