Position Overview

The Assistant Director leads Student Engagement programs and initiatives in ISS. Reporting to the Director of ISS, the Assistant Director will oversee development and delivery of student engagement activities, including orientation, retention activities, programming, and outreach throughout the student lifecycle. Designs and conducts assessments and prepares reports on engagement and retention programs. The assistant director will supervise a team of staff and student assistants. The Assistant Director will work in collaboration with other leadership both within and outside ISS to support international student success.


Job Description

The responsibilities of the Assistant Director include but are not limited to:

50% Engagement Program and Advising Leadership and Management

  • Lead the Student Engagement area of ISS; supervise staff and student employees.
  • Oversee a comprehensive engagement strategy that supports the full student life-cycle. This includes orientation and transition programs, retention activities and advising, career and development programming, and cultural programming.
  • Collaborate with ISS recruitment, admissions, document production, and immigration advising staff to facilitate consistent engagement of students from prospect into orientation.
  • Collaborate with document production and immigration advising staff, and partner units at KU (such as Career Services) to support international student transitions from KU into careers.
  • Conduct assessments of engagement and retention activities, and utilize data to make continual improvements to programs and services.
  • Collaborate with other university units such as Academic Success and Student Affairs to  facilitate equitable access for international students to university-wide student development resources.
  • Develop strong, mutually beneficial relationships across campus in the Lawrence community to provide a network for student wellbeing and support.
  • Lead communication with international student groups and networks.
  • Develop a campus culture that builds future alumni identity among international students.

40% Pre-arrival communication and Orientation
  • Manage new international student orientation programs and coordinate with immigration advising staff for mandatory check-ins for both short-term and long-term international students.
  • Supervise orientation staff.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Transition Programs, advising units, and other campus partners to support integration of international populations in university level activities. This may include representing ISS on committees and work groups and adjusting programming efforts where appropriate to facilitate integration.
  • Collaborate with Student Affairs units -- including housing and dining services, and Watkins Health Center -- and Transportation services to support student arrival experiences. Conduct assessments of orientation activities, and utilize data to make continual improvements to programs.
10% Broader ISS unit responsibilities
  • Participation in ISS management and planning as a member of the leadership staff.
  • Other duties as assigned by the ISS Director.

Position Requirements

  • This position begins on-site but would be eligible to move to a hybrid model after incumbent successfully completes the 6-month probationary period.  After successfully completing probation, incumbent may work one (1) day a week remotely based on a set departmental schedule.  

  • Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree plus two (2) years of related work experience in a college or university setting OR a Bachelor’s degree plus five (5) years of related work experience in a college or university setting.
  • At least one (1) year experience in planning, organizing and implementing workshops, seminars and/or programs.
  • One (1) year supervisory experience of staff and/or graduate assistants.
  • Experience teaching, advising, or counseling students in a college or university setting.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills as evidenced by the application materials.  
  • Must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident of the U.S.   

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree with emphasis in International Education, Educational Administration, counseling, English as a Second Language, foreign languages and cultures or other related fields and three (3) years of experience in a college or university setting.
  • Three (3) or more years experience supervising staff.
  • Experience in student support or student success.
  • Experience working with international students and/or living, studying, and working abroad
  • Experience with international student orientation programs and/or comparable experience.
  • At least three years of programming or related experience in a college or university setting.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language.
