The Position:

With a rich history of music excellence at the University of Tennessee, the former School of Music officially became the College of Music (COM) in July 2023. As one of the few standalone music colleges among state universities in the United States, the COM affords music students a wide variety of professional experiences. Students can explore music through the lenses of analysis, business, composition, conducting, education, musicology, performance, and technology. Now is an exciting time as the newly formed COM builds its team to support its students and cultivate relationships with the community and supporters of the college.

 

As a member of the COM undergraduate admissions and student success team, the Assistant Director of Student Engagement will report to the Director of Admissions & Student Success and will be responsible for implementing student retention strategies,, co-directing  the COM Student Ambassador program, mentoring first-year students, teaching and/or co-teaching one or multiple sections of the COM First-Year Studies seminar classes, and co-directing the Crescendo Living and Learning Community. The Assistant Director will also serve as the administrator of the University Community Music School (CMS) and the policy manager for Conflict of Interest (COI) in the College of Music (COM).

 

This person must be highly organized, have excellent oral and written communication skills, be able to work with a wide variety of people, and be capable of managing numerous projects at one time. This person will reside in Knoxville, Tennessee as this position is primarily on-site, though some remote work will be possible. The salary range for this position is $60,000-$65,000 and is dependent on experience and qualifications.

Qualifications

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Student Engagement and Retention:

Collaborate with administrators on student success and student engagement initiatives, consult administration on best-practices in student success, retention, and engagement. Possess an innovative, entrepreneurial spirit and thrive in a fast-paced, energetic academic environment. Manage the revitalization and implementation of a comprehensive student development program. This person will establish guidelines and implement programs which strengthen student involvement and engage students through classroom training, workshops, events and outreach activities. Report and summarize progress of new and existing student programs, recommending suggestions for improvement; coordinate with relevant administrators to disseminate information and implement changes in programing to increase student participation.

 

Community Music School Administration and Compliance:

Serve as Community Music School (CMS) Administrator & Conflict of Interest (COI) Manager for the COM. Design, consult on, plan, and oversee the University Community Music School, the COM’s private lesson program and community school. Oversee student & teacher policies, keep records on weekly lessons, manage payments of students. Develop, implement, and assess UCMS marketing strategies and recruitment of students to UCMS. Implement COI training and share information with COM administrators, staff, and faculty. Consult COM administrators on other CMS and COI data. Framework with faculty and identifying innovative programming that will support the CMS Strategic Plan. Consult with administration to develop a COM strategic plan in COI. Collaborate with campus COI experts and ensure the COM complies with policies. Directly oversee all faculty employed by the CMS, monitor student and faculty attendance, absences, ensuring accurate documentation, support the business manager with time reporting and payroll processes, respond to CMS faculty and CMS current and prospective students in an effective and timely manner, manage faculty communications team on advertising and promotional materials.

This position offers a unique opportunity to blend administrative prowess with a passion for music education. Serve as the Community Music School (CMS) Administrator and Conflict of Interest (COI) Manager for the COM. Be at the forefront of developing our University Community Music School, overseeing private lessons and community programs with creativity and precision. Craft strategic marketing approaches to attract new students, ensuring smooth operations through record-keeping and payment management, and fostering a mutually beneficial environment for both students and faculty. Collaborate with COM administrators and faculty to develop programming that will support the CMS Strategic Plan.

As the COI Manager, you'll play a pivotal role in upholding ethical standards within the CMS. Responsibilities will include implementing comprehensive COI training, advising on data management, and collaborating with campus experts to ensure compliance with policies. Contribute to the development of strategic plans that align with our mission and values.

Co-Direct COM Student Ambassador Program:

Serve as Assistant Director of the Student Ambassador Program, which oversees the College of Music group tours, the Music Major for a Day program, audition days, and other campus engagement activities. Consult the Director of Admissions & Student Success on student engagement needs and implement programming to all those strategies. Employ strategic incentives to increase student participation in signature events. Continuously evaluate the level of student engagement and participation in events and implement changes to initiatives as needed.

·         Knowledge of best practices in student recruitment.

·         Music background and knowledge of music curricula, School of Music procedures, and/or knowledge of UT Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize recruitment and retention data.

·         Ability to mentor and motivate others.

·         Ability to adapt and be flexible.

·         Strong organizational and time management skills, high attention to detail.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor level degree or equivalent in music, education, communication, PR, student affairs, or related field with 1-2 years in higher education recruiting, student success, engagement or related field. 

Preferred Qualifications: Master level Degree in music, education, communication, PR, student affairs, or related field with 5-7 years in higher education recruiting, student success, engagement or related field.
