Student Centers is a fast-paced, high-energy environment with extensive and substantive student and guest contact. Staff members work collaboratively within the office and with many other university-wide constituent groups, and are expected to exercise a high degree of responsibility and independent judgment and go work irregular or extended hours during peak programming times.

Job Overview

The Assistant Director of Student Centers responds to day-to-day operational needs, such as hiring and supervising 35+ student staff in support of information desk services and event management, creating and managing the program schedule, and engaging students and guests in the daily activities of the centers. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Schedule and manage events within Student Centers venues, communicating with clients regarding reservations and management of program needs, including billing and invoicing. 
  • Coordinate a student staff training program for Student Centers Operations Coordinators in collaboration with departmental colleagues and other campus departments
  • Establish policies and practices for the usage of Student Centers spaces and resources, including management of community spaces, administration of special projects, and oversight of departmentally developed promotions, celebrations, and programs 

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Director of Student Centers, the Assistant Director of Student Centers works closely with the Director and Operations Manager in managing the day-to-day operations of Student Centers. 

They hire, train, and schedule 35+ undergraduate student staff to support events and activities and provide information desk coverage for expansive daily operating hours; and, in the absence of the Director, the serve as supervisor and advisor to the Graduate Assistants and Operations Manager.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree - preference for Master’s degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Student Affairs or equivalency in training and full-time work
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant work experience

  • Experience with events management and operational support
  • Ability to work collaboratively with university students, staff, faculty, guests, and affiliates
  • Experience establishing and maintaining ongoing relationships with clients and vendors.
  • Excellent customer service, including verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative and work under minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel), Google Suite applications (e.g., Gmail, Google Docs), EMS Event Management Software, and technology trends in office and/or educational settings
  • Supervisory experience required and knowledge of the fundamental principles of student development
  • Ability to perform light to moderate physical activity and to provide physical management of venue equipment on a regular basis

Preferred qualifications

  • Professional or paraprofessional experience in student unions and/or student activities in a higher education environment or similar field with a combination of facilities management, budget management, event planning, technical (audio-visual) knowledge, advising, and/or programming
  • Familiarity with audiovisual and technical equipment, web development, and event technology
  • An understanding of higher education principles within the context of the Catholic and Jesuit traditions
