Position Focus:


Reporting to the Associate Chief of Clinical Operations, the Assistant Director of Specialty Services is a strategic partner to Medical Leadership of Yale Medicine for specialty care. Provides leadership to all divisions for Specialty services.  Develops implements and monitors programs, systems, policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of patient care and satisfaction through operational efficiency, optimal utilization and productivity of staff.  Serves as a strategic partner to Operations Officer and may serve as primary back up to the clinical management of ambulatory care services. Serves as a member of the Yale Health Leadership team. Serves as Executive lead of organization wide Nurse Safe Practice to ensure compliance with nursing practice and regulatory compliance. Identifies efficiencies and opportunities for cost efficiencies and practices to maintain and/or reduce program costs.  Manages operating budget, oversees the provision and maintenance of high quality of Nursing Service within medical, surgical, dermatology and ophthalmology and Fast Track associated divisions.  Shares on call responsibilities for organization. 

Additional Duties include:


  • Develop, promote and maintain Nursing Service standards of practices of YUHS. 
  • Ensures patient safety at all levels of delivery.
  • May serve as back up to Clinical Operations Officer for Ambulatory Clinical Services.
  • Oversight and nursing leadership to Medical and Surgical Specialties.
  • Responsible for performance improvement, staff development and culture enhancement in all areas.
  • Oversight of Fast Track Acute Care services and back up to Acute Care leadership.
  • Responsible for collaborating with Yale Medicine leadership, including Care Center, for above services to ensure timely access for Yale health members.
  • Oversight of financial monitoring and adherence to capitation agreements.
  • Acts as a liaison to promote communication, effective working relationships and coordination of activities between Yale medicine, consultants and Yale Health.
  • Oversight, coordination and partnership with Yale Medicine consultants for onboarding of new specialists during the year.
  • Analytic review of multiple access metrics and reports around access, referral-processing metrics.
  • Oversight and expansion of video visits and telemedicine for all specialties services.
  • Serves on Yale Medicine/Yale Health Leadership team and Yale Health Executive Committee.
  • Supports patient education and pharmacy initiatives for patient care in departments with emphasis on new medications.
  • Lead and develop the Nurse Practice Council, serves as executive leadership.
  • Ensures shared governance model where appropriate in the organization.
  • Develops metrics, reporting and trends to meet current volume/demand, and anticipate future patient service needs.
  • Anticipates changes in technique, equipment, regulatory compliance and safety to ensure optimal delivery of care at all times.
  • Responsible for financial budgets of all divisions. 
  • In collaboration with the key leadership, support and provide coordination and of any university wide event/outbreak, trend that may require tracking and care delivery.
  • Serves on Executive Committee and Chair of Nurse Safe Practice for organization.
  • Provides mentorship and nursing leadership to Clinical Nurse management team in adult, pediatric and specialty services.
  • Collaborates with Nursing Education staff to ensure optimal training, orientation and on boarding of all new and current RN staff. 
  • Promotes a positive, engaged professional environment with outstanding communication and partnerships to all Clinical Managers and Clinician Chiefs.
  • Develops and maintains policy and procedures for all divisions. 
  • Performance management program for leadership, front line licensed and ancillary staff.
  • Participates in professional organizations, develops collegial relationships with YNHH nursing professionals, and attends conference and seminars.

Essential Duties

1. Directs, monitors, and assesses needs and directs the application of resources of an administrative University office dealing with one or more major functional areas. 2. Directs and implements solutions to problems that are routine to complex in nature and that affect multiple functional areas of responsibility. 3. Plans and/or participates in planning University activities on a long-term basis to comply with University goals and objectives. 4. Establishes and implements consistent university-wide policies in multiple functional areas of responsibility. 5. Ensures that University office policies and procedures are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.  6. Develops and monitors goals and objectives for managerial and professional staff in compliance with University strategies.  7. Directs a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and eight years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated leadership ability.  Prior supervisory and administrative responsibilities. Ability to lead complex, multidisciplinary teams and serve as a change agent. Comprehensive knowledge of standards of care, including regulatory and safety standards on state and federal level.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Six years of previous experience in Nursing Service Administration, at least two of which have been in rehabilitative nursing or an acute care inpatient setting. 


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Strong ability to lead, train and motivate staff to work effectively with a wide range of patients, university partners and health care professionals.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Well-developed organizational, managerial and communication skills, conflict resolution, team building skills as well as the ability to work in emergent, high stress situations.  Passion for leading in a challenging and changing environment utilizing innovation, technology and best practices.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Well-developed oral and written communication skills. Excellent attendance, punctuality and reliability.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

M.S.N. in Nursing or Health Services Administration or evidence of on-going post baccalaureate training in Nursing Administration.
