Summary of Duties:

The Assistant Director of Residence Life is a central member of the administrative staff and reports to the Director of the department. The Assistant Director’s primary responsibilities are: directly supervise and evaluate Residential Education Directors in the WSU residence hall system; through live-in professional staff indirectly supervise paraprofessional staff; in collaboration with the live-in staff, ensure coordination of desk operations in up to 12 residence halls; coordinate the planning and presentation of staff training initiatives; coordinate and advise, on average, three department committees (appointed annually). Provide support and response to student emergencies including participation in an on-call rotation. Serve as departmental liaison with designated University partners; respond to daily administrative tasks and student/staff concerns; and assume departmental responsibilities as directed.


Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and four (4) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least one (1) year of managerial experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a yearforyear basis. Education and experience can be tailored to fit the specific organizational entity/directorial assignment. Positions may require applicable licensure and/or certification.

  • Supervisory experience of graduate hall directors, paraprofessional staff or other personnel. 

  • Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy and practice of participatory management and community standards. 

  • Demonstrated competence with Microsoft Windows and MS-Office computer software. 

  • Must be willing and able to keep regular hours and work some evenings and weekends. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters’ degree in a relevant field. 

  • Three years post-master’s experience working in a college or university residence hall system or group living environment. 

  • Supervisory experience of full-time live-in residence hall staff. 

  • Demonstrated experience in staff training and development. 

  • Demonstrated experience with large group presentations. 

  • Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of student development and academic success. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work with students and administrators in a broad range of situations. 

  • Demonstrated genuine concern/interest for the welfare of students. 

  • Demonstrated experience with living, learning communities/academic success programs. 

  • Demonstrated experience with faculty partnerships. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student and staff population. 

  • Demonstrated experience with developing community in the residence hall and college campus environment. 

  • Demonstrated commitment to and/or experience advocating for diversity. 

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license.

Monthly Salary:

$5,598.97 – $6,255.82

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range.
