Job Description

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is seeking an energetic and creative individual for the position of Assistant Director for Research Advancement. The Assistant Director for Research Advancement leads, manages, and supervises the Research Advancement team for the Herberger Institute. The Assistant Director for Research Advancement works collaboratively with faculty, the Dean's office and other stakeholders to develop and manage the cutting edge research portfolio of the Herberger Institute. The Assistant Director for Research Advancement plans, directs, and coordinates resources and efforts by all parties to ensure timely delivery of external funding proposal submissions and project outcomes in accordance with sponsors’ expectations and requirements. The Assistant Director for Research Advancement collaborates with the ASU Knowledge Enterprise office and also has the opportunity to identify, develop, and implement resources, programs, and activities in support of the Herberger Institute’s research enterprise.

Essential Duties

  • Manages and supports a research team responsible for pre-award proposal management and post-award administration.
  • Participates in strategic decisions regarding types of projects, expertise development, future direction of project efforts, and integration with long term Herberger Institute and ASU goals.
  • Advances the Institute’s research portfolio and processes with the aims of developing an ethic of inclusion and equity across all endeavors. 
  • Identifies internal and/or external funding opportunities and connects faculty with research funding opportunities. 
  • Works closely and collaboratively with key stakeholders to define project scope, strategy, budget, and outcomes for sponsored projects.
  • Establishes and continually monitors project expectations with all parties; assigns tasks and identifies issues for resolution to ensure optimal effectiveness.
  • Manages, coaches, and supervises all project team members to ensure optimal outcomes; builds, develops, and maintains relationships vital to project success.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding project status and prepares and maintains project reports and schedules; tracks milestones and deliverables; re-sets expectations as needed in consideration of project progress/outcomes.
  • Prepares and responds to regulatory reporting and filing to ensure compliance, including post-project reports, budget allocations and summaries to ensure timely dissemination of information to all parties.
  • Works collaboratively with partners in the ASU Knowledge Enterprise to coordinate research and funding efforts and meet guidelines. 
  • Develops and implements, with ASU and Herberger team members, workshops for faculty and staff in support of the research enterprise.
  • Leads initiatives and develops solutions to meet evolving needs; applies knowledge of strategic planning, forecasting and critical thinking.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field AND six years administrative experience in a field appropriate to the area/unit of assignment, which includes three years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in developing cross-campus and external partnerships in support of the Institute’s research objectives. 
  • Experience in developing and making presentations related to the Institute’s research mission, goals, and accomplishments. 
  • Experience in sponsored projects, including work with federal agencies such as NSF and NIH, as well as philanthropic foundations who support research, and their research portals. 
  • Experience in using a collaborative, mission-oriented management and communication style.
  • Experience in managing and developing employees.
  • Experience in research advancement/administration and delivery of support services, including project or fiscal budgeting. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable regulations, standards and requirements associated with grant and contract research administration. 
  • Experience in working effectively in a complex organization requiring strong influencing and negotiating skills. 
  • Experience in working effectively in an environment subject to quickly changing priorities and deadlines.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolutions of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to computer workstation / laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, copier, and telephone.
