General Information
The Office of Financial Reporting seeks an Assistant Director to join us in supporting the University’s mission by producing reliable, timely financial information and transactions. We are a customer-service oriented office with a strong commitment to quality, integrity, and professionalism.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee the preparation and completion of timely and accurate financial reports, financial information and analysis, data requests, etc. provided to both internal and external sources. Reports include, but are not limited to the annual NCAA/EADA Reports, quarterly Board of Visitors Report, and monthly Revenue Report.
  • Assist the Director in the review, analysis and implementation of new GASB standards and all other financial reporting guidelines and standards.
  • Assist with the annual audit requests.
  • Direct and supervise professional accountants, clerical staff, and possibly students.
  • Oversee general ledger account maintenance and audits of chart of accounts for accuracy and compliance with University, State and Federal guidelines.
  • Research and evaluate tax related issues impacting the University, including preparation of various Form 990’s and University UBIT Tax returns.
  • Responsible for accounting and reporting of JMI operations (James Madison Innovations).
  • Serve as backup to the Director.
  • Special assignments and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Experience in public accounting.
  • Experience in state university or other higher education setting.
  • Supervisory experience over two or more full-time direct reports.
  • Experience in auditing, preparing, or aiding in the preparation of financial statements for a large organization.
  • Expert knowledge of accounting principles as defined by GAAP as well as a general working knowledge of office procedures and practices. 
  • Demonstrated familiarity with GASB standards and/or higher education financial operations, policies and procedures.
  • The ability to work independently with minor supervision and to work effectively with other employees both within the department and across the University community as a whole.
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure when necessary to meet deadlines, etc., including working occasional weekends during financial statements season.
  • Computer experience is required, with a focus in Excel or other spreadsheets preferred. Experience with PeopleSoft or other financial management system is beneficial.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
