Position Description

The Department of Philosophy seeks an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies (ADUS) to lead the department’s undergraduate program.  Reporting to the Department Chair on academic matters and the Department Administrator on administrative matters, the ADUS will play a pivotal role in student advising and continued development of the department’s teaching portfolio. The ADUS will work closely with the Department’s Undergraduate Program Coordinator and Concentration Advisor, to administer all aspects of the undergraduate program. More specifically, the ADUS will:

  • Collaborate with faculty on curriculum planning and development.  Makes recommendations regarding needed changes to undergraduate program and ensures that changes are made in accordance with College policy.
  • Serve as the primary academic adviser for undergraduate concentrators.
  • Advise faculty on how to support students facing unusual challenges.
  • Coordinate Teaching Fellow assignments to courses.
  • Conduct the selection process for assigning graduate students as tutorial instructors.
  • Direct the Honors Thesis programs for philosophy concentrators, including overseeing the assignment of thesis advisers and the thesis workshop.
  • Envision, oversee, and develop events and initiatives related to the undergraduate program.
  • Periodically advise an undergraduate honors thesis.
  • Work with the Office of Institutional Research & Analytics to develop reports measuring program success.
  • Liaise with the Office of Undergraduate Education, the Registrar’s Office, and other College offices as needed. 
  • Teach two courses per year, to be determined in consultation with the Chair.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • A Ph.D. in Philosophy is required for teaching.
  • Experience teaching and advising diverse students. 
  • Previous administrative experience is a plus 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong commitment to continuous process improvement 
  • Regular availability in the office required, with at least 3 days a week working on campus during the semester. There will be more flexibility for remote work during the school breaks. 

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting using near vision use for reading and computer use for extended periods of time
  • Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in an office setting

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
