Description
The Assistant Director is responsible to provide assistance to VA students to manage their educational benefits and provide support with educational planning.
Responsibilities
School Certifying Official (SCO) for VA Educational Benefits (65%). 
  • Certify the educational benefits of VA students and/or their dependents at UNE
  • Certify through VA Once and ensure that all student data is updated and accurate. 
  • Monitor academic progress of VA students throughout each semester to update the VA when necessary. 
  • Assist with processing military withdrawals. 
  • Attend VA conferences to network and get the latest information from the VA. 
  • Keep abreast on changing VA rules VA and the impact on UNE students. 
  • Keep required records and documentation of all VA certification. 

Advise students on procedures regarding their benefits. (20%) 
  • Provide customer service regarding VA educational benefits. 
  • Proactively solve issues that arise regarding students’ benefits. 
  • Frequently communicate with student’s reminding them of VA policies and procedures. 
  • Counsel new and continuing VA students. 

Collaborate with other UNE Departments and the VA. (10%) 
  • Communicate with the Bursar’s office on students’ benefits and ensure they are being processed in a timely manner. 
  • Serve as the liaison between the Bursar and the VA. 
  • Work with the Bursar to settle old debts. 
  • Work with vocational rehab counselors and provide required information on chapter 31 students. 
  • Communicate with the VA on student’s benefits. 

Manage Certification Systems/Reports. (5%) 
  • Update the VA Once System by inputting new terms each semester and adding new majors.
  • Identify reporting needs and work with Institutional Research to generate reports. 
  • Provide VA with new Academic Catalog on a yearly basis. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Supervision Exercised:
Assigned staff and work study students as needed. 
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree plus 3 to 5 years of relevant experience including higher education experience working with the Veteran population, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. 
 
• Commitment to a student-centered approach, demonstrating initiative in reaching out and building relationships with veterans in the student body. 
• Ability to meet and enforce deadlines, take initiative, and work independently to carry out assignments. 
• Superior communication, presentation, interpersonal, ambassadorial, and organizational skills 
• Excellent analytical/problem-solving skills. 
• Previous experience with Banner is a Plus 
• Previous Business Intelligence and reporting tools experience such as Cognos Reporting Studio a plus. 
• Experience in maintaining complex records systems. 
• Familiarity with higher education organization and policies. 
• Demonstrate clear and effective communication skills with groups and individuals including verbal, written, and group presentations 
• Ability to deal effectively with students, faculty, staff, senior administrators, parents, government agencies and other outside organizations.
