About the Department
 

The Office of the Dean of Students in the College has broad responsibility for the success of all College students. The Dean of Students reports to the Dean of the College. The office consists of Academic Advisers, Deans, and Student Success and Programming staff. The staff in the Office of College Community Standards oversee matters of student conduct, academic progress standards, leaves of absences, resumptions of study, and student retention initiatives. The office also supports students with physical and mental health needs. The Office of the Dean of Students in the College and the Office of College Community Standards are committed to enriching the working environment for all staff by promoting a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability. Job Summary
 

The Assistant Director of the Office of College Community Standards (OCCS) reports to the Director of the Office of College Community Standards and Assistant Dean of Students in the College. The Assistant Director works closely with UChicago Student Wellness, Student Disability Services, Campus & Student Life, Housing & Residential Life, and the Academic Advisers on issues relating to essential areas of student support. The Assistant Director works closely with students facing medical and psychological issues and plans students’ return to school after hospitalizations. The Assistant Director works with Student Disability Services to coordinate accommodations for students in the College. The Assistant Director provides case management for students going on and returning from leave or suspension and manages the leave of absence process for the College. The Assistant Director works with the Director of OCCS to manage the College’s area disciplinary processes. This position also plays a significant role, together with the College Academic Advising Office, to help manage the College’s academic review process.

Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with the other staff in OCCS and the Academic Advisers, works with students facing medical and psychological issues and helps plan students’ return to school after hospitalizations.
  • Helps advisers develop effective advising strategies for resuming students.
  • Attends weekly Students of Concern meeting with campus partners.
  • Represents the Dean of Students in academic planning meetings after medical and psychiatric hospitalizations with students and parents, as well as with other interventions with students in crisis outside of the hospital.
  • Manages student requests such as work approval, security clearances, and Dean’s forms for medical and law school.
  • Develops and implements orientation programming relating to community standards, including reorientation initiatives for those students returning from leaves from study.
  • Manages the leave of absence and resumption of studies processes.
  • Processes leaves of absences in AIS (Academic Information System) and makes other system updates as needed to student records for the leave of absence and resumption of studies processes.
  • Supports students while on leave of absence or suspension from the College to ensure access to resources and facilitate their eventual return to the College.
  • Reviews and approves students for various changes of status such as Extended Study, No Further Enrollments, and Administrative Withdrawals.
  • With OCCS team, helps to manage the College’s academic review process.
  • Communicates with students and parents about various College policies and processes.
  • Provides training to Academic Advisers, Resident Heads, and other offices as needed, related to the work of OCCS.
  • Recommends process improvements for programs that relate to critical student-life improvement, including emergency management, accommodations for students with disabilities, and/or the administration of health care services and programs for students.
  • Collaborates with academic divisions in educating students on safety issues. Interprets student disciplinary issues and prepares an annual university summary of disciplinary actions. Counsels students, parents, and staff in response to concerns, and handles complex situations including student crises.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Master’s degree.

Experience:

  • Minimally 5 years relevant experience.
  • Minimally 2 years experience working in higher education, student case management, student hospitalizations or students taking leaves of absence. Strong commitment to young adults and the values and goals of a liberal arts education.
  • Familiarity with higher education structures and functions of its various offices and departments.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in Mac and PC environments.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and online organizational tools.
  • Familiarity with Adobe graphic design/web development environments.
  • Proficiency with web and social media platforms.
  • Willing and able to learn new software and database tools.
  • Working knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word, Power Point, discipline related software.

  • Demonstrated experience in collaboration among colleagues and/or departments to focus on meeting the needs of students. Excellent computer skills and ability to use complex databases and other record keeping systems.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize and manage concurrent tasks with interruptions.
  • Possess a high attention to detail and strong follow up skills.
