Description of Work Unit
The Black/African American Cultural Center (B/AACC) is part of the Division of Student Affairs, specifically one of seven Student Diversity Programs and Services (SDPS) offices that support underrepresented students at Colorado State University (CSU). B/AACC assists students who identify as or with the Black/African American culture with their transition to and through Colorado State University. We cultivate a sense of belonging away from home while supporting and encouraging students to utilize all resources available to achieve academic and personal success. We do this by encouraging student engagement, academic success, cultural pride, empowerment, and volunteer/leadership opportunities. We strive to promote a safe, affirming and inclusive environment that focuses on awareness and understanding. B/AACC supports and strengthens the academic, professional, personal and cultural experience of students by providing workshops, leadership opportunities, peer and professional mentoring and cultural awareness programs that promote student success and retention. B/AACC collaborates with and promotes programs and leadership opportunities that offer cross-cultural and intersectional perspectives with the other SDPS cultural and resource centers. Position Summary
The Assistant Director of the Black/African American Cultural Center is a 12-month full- time, Administrative Professional position reporting directly to the Director of the Black/African American Cultural Center, a unit within the Student Diversity Programs and Services (SDPS) cluster and a department within the Division of Student Affairs. The Assistant Director shares in providing leadership for the mission of the center through the initiation, development, administration, supervision, advising, training and guiding FTE and student staff, individual students, and student groups providing appropriate support and resources. The Assistant Director provides leadership in the development and the implementation of education and outreach programming on social justice issues, with a specific focus on issues impacting students who identify with Black/African American culture. Knowledge of and experience with educational programming from an intersectional framework is a core component of this position. In addition, this position will actively embrace and role model Colorado State University’s Principles of Community (Inclusion, Integrity, Respect, Service, Social Justice). The Assistant Director is a direct report to the Director of B/AACC, assuming leadership responsibilities and delegated decision making authority for all department operations in the absence of the Director. Some evening and weekend work hours depend on program and event offerings or to best meet the needs of our students.
Required Job Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Sociology, Social Work, African American or Ethnic Studies or other related fields completed by the start date. 
•Demonstrated understanding of the diverse and intersectional needs and concerns of Black/African American and multiracial/multicultural students and communities 
•Demonstrated experience coordinating and planning student success and retention initiatives for Black/African America, multiracial/multicultural students and/or other historically underrepresented student populations. 
• Demonstrated experience working on a college campus in a role that worked directly with students related to the personal engagement of dynamics of power, privilege and oppression across multiple identities (ie. race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, disability, religion, etc.) 
•One-year direct student staff supervision experience 
•Demonstrated experience with coordinating, planning and facilitating of social justice educational programming about topics related to intersectionality, power, privilege, and oppression across multiple identities (ie. race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexuality, class, disability, religion, etc.) 
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
• Three years full time professional experience, post-masters, working with college students and/or in higher education 
•Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining effective collaborative relationships with individuals and organizations across identities 
•Demonstrated ongoing commitment to social justice advocacy at individual, group, and/or community level 
•Experience working with students and colleagues as an educator, advisor, leader, mentor and role model 
•Experience with personnel management including coordinating, hiring, training and supervision of full-time professional staff and student staff 
•Demonstrated experience with data collection, creating reports, assessment and developing/implementing learning outcomes 
•Demonstrated ability to implement strategic initiatives based on assessment data that improve program and student success outcomes

-Responsible for Leadership Retreat including creating agenda, identifying and selecting topics, logistical arrangements, and assessment to evaluate/improve future retreats
-Responsible for selection, training, supervision and evaluation of peer mentors and participants
-Teach Rites of Passage Mentoring class and create class syllabus in collaboration with the Department of Human Development and Family Studies
-Lead the development of programs/services designed to support student transition and retention
-Assist in the development and delivery of high impact programs in relation to retention and graduation
-Collaborate with campus partners to provide quality programming, both in and out of the classroom
-Assist in the coordination of outreach efforts with CSU’s Black Rams affinity group to engage in opportunities that will promote funds, mentoring and programmatic opportunities and support
-Manage program budget and its expenditures by working with Director
-Manage payroll, grants, foundation and sponsorship dollars
- Assist with assessments and strategic planning activities
-Participate in Student Diversity Programs and Services Cluster. Division of Student Affairs and other campus-wide projects through committee and special activities

• Supervise (hire, on-board, train, mentor, coach, discipline) one FTE
• Student Success Coordinator, conduct annual evaluation and determining annual merit salary increase
• Collaborate with Director and Student Success Coordinator on recruiting, make hiring decisions, train, schedule, evaluate, teach and support a minimum of 15 student staff who work a combined 150 hours per week
• Directly supervises, mentor, train up to 5 student staff including Events Coordinator, Ram Events Liaison, Transfer Coordinator and Practicum students
• Analyze student-staffing needs while considering budget and scheduled programs and events; decide appropriate staffing adjustments and analyze the outcome to improving services and inform budget management

• Provide leadership and vision for education and outreach programming on social justice issues, with a specific focus on issues impacting Black/African American and multiracial/multiethnic communities for the campus and community through various workshops and educational programs
• Establish and maintain collaborative relationships and partnerships across campus including academic departments and student affairs units to build resources for supporting student success and make appropriate referrals as needed
• Involvement and commitment with the campus wide initiative retaining first-generation, low-income students of color in the Community for Excellence program
• Represent B/AACC by collaborating with colleagues in Student Diversity Programs and Services cluster, Division of Student Affairs in campus-wide projects through committee work and special activities
• Make in the moment decisions supporting students through crisis situations, including situations where students present a danger to themselves or others, family crisis situations, roommate issues, substance use and abuse issues, or disruptive classroom behavior.
•Determine most appropriate course of immediate action to mitigate situation and how to directly support students through on and off campus referrals and subsequent follow-up to ensure protocol adherence.
• Determines appropriate information and communicates recommended actions directly with faculty for students experiencing bias in the classroom.
• Determine most effective process and support for student’s sociocultural transitions to and engagement in campus life via 1:1 consultation or group interaction
• Determine appropriate resources and provide referrals when advising students how to navigate sensitive, difficult and complex concerns involving mental health financial resources and personal challenges such as family and relationship issues.
• Interact with students regularly to establish rapport, creating a safe sense of belonging in B/AACC in order to act as a conduit to form trusting relationships with campus departments, faculty and staff.
• Advise and create leadership development trainings for affiliated student organizations and student leaders (Presidents Multicultural Student Advisory Council Representatives, Student Government Representatives, etc.) and their programming efforts.
• Serve as a positive role model, actively embracing and role modeling Colorado State University’s Principles of Community to colleagues and students
