Assistant Director of Student Support - Kinesiology Recreation & Sport Studies

Regular, Full-time, Market Range 09

The purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Student Support perform the operations of Student Support in the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies (KRSS).

The Assistant Director of Student Support manages the practicum and internship programs required by all KRSS majors, serves as a departmental academic advisor and instructor, prepares KRSS undergraduate majors to pursue their career goals, and strategically builds student relationships that will lead to enhanced alumni engagement.

The department serves over 1400 undergraduate and 160 graduate students, and is comprised of 27 full-time faculty, seven staff, and over 60 part-time faculty and graduate associates.

The department also includes the Physical Education Activity Program, which serves over 5,000 students across campus each year.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Management of Practicum and Internship programs in KRSS
    • Oversee field experience opportunities for approximately 250-350 students each semester.
    • Establish evaluation and reporting procedures for all practicum/internship courses, and conduct periodic reviews as needed for effectiveness.
    • Collect quantitative and qualitative data about the practicum/internship courses each semester and provide end of semester reports to department head and program areas.
    • Identify sites for departmental practicums and internships.
    • Build and maintain relationships with site supervisors and convey significance of their investment in our students each semester.
    • Advertise field experience, practicum, and internship opportunities to students, using various methods to effectively reach target program students.
    • Research, identify, and implement ways to improve and/or expand our department’s practicum/internship programs.
    • Field placements and Instructor for  Practicum and Internship courses for a program within the department.
    • Develop and maintain a handbook (i.e.- policy manual) for practicums and internships.
  • Academic Advising
    • Direct supervision of 2 Advisor II positions, including evaluating performance and administering corrective action when warranted.
    • Assisting students in developing and implementing sound educational plans, integrating academic and career advising with self-exploration, leadership, and experience learning. Working primarily with upper-division students, this position supports students as they transition at various points throughout their academic careers at UT which includes: self-exploration that focuses on strengths, interests, and values; career exploration in both advising and instructional settings; identification and supervision of co-curricular, career and experience learning, and leadership opportunities to support both academic and professional development; and development of an academic plan that aligns with aspirations and abilities.
    • Serve as primary academic advisor for approximately 100 KRSS undergraduate students.
    • Advise faculty and complete tasks for curricular issues including petitions, student registration, possible catalog changes, student concerns and problems, & other needs as requested.
    • Represent the department at various functions and on various committees.
    • Assist with commencement planning, freshman/transfer orientation, and departmental special events.
    • Maintain databases of student information as a basis for reporting and tracking of student outcomes of all undergraduate programs.
  • Teach a 3 credit undergraduate course in each fall and spring semester.
 



Qualifications

 

Minimum/Required Qualifications (include education, experience, skills & abilities. Licenses & certifications):

  • Master’s Degree required
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a job/field related to student services.
  • Proficient computer skills: MS Office, including extensive use of spreadsheets; Adobe suite; Google suite; student information systems.
  • Extensive problem solving skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies.
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to pay attention to details, remain calm in stressful situations, and multi-task.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of university resources for student referrals and problem solving.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Supervisory experience
  • 5 years of experience in a job/field related to student services.
  • 2-3 years of experience teaching.
  • Knowledge of Banner and GradesFirst.
  • Knowledge of UT Policies and Procedures.
