Job Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, the Assistant Director of Student Success for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) works in unison with the DEIB Program Coordinators and the Assistant Dean to develop, organize, implement and assess student success programs related to the Isenberg School of Management (ISOM) Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging priorities. These activities and initiatives include talented student recruitment; one-on-one and small group advising and mentoring of Isenberg students, especially among traditionally underrepresented groups; and supporting and contributing to the development and program offerings that foster academic success, community and career preparedness.

Essential Functions

  • Provides culturally competent academic advising in individualized and small group settings to a diverse population of ISOM students throughout the calendar year.
  • Responds to at-risk students experiencing academic and often critical personal difficulties by addressing relevant issues and making appropriate referrals to University agencies.  In conjunction with the ISOM Undergraduate Program office, identifies and initiates strategies to proactively support retention and timely graduation for students from traditionally marginalized populations.
  • Contributes to the development and management of high impact programs, events and curricula that promote Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging within ISOM and develops students into inclusive leaders and global citizens.
  • Analyzes complex data to assess effectiveness of initiatives and programs on an ongoing basis to ensure proper support for underrepresented groups. Reports findings with the Assistant Dean to the ISOM senior leadership, campus-wide and external stakeholders.
  • Manages budgets and develops reports on grant or donor funded student success initiatives. Reports findings to senior leadership, campus-wide and external stakeholders. 
  • Responds to and supports student experiences related to climate matters.
  • Develops and increases mentoring opportunities, including peer mentoring, paying particular attention to support historically underrepresented student groups. 
  • Develops and increases local, regional, and national opportunities to recruit and mentor high school students from underrepresented and first-generation populations to prepare them to become applicants to ISOM. 
  • Provides supervision to DEIB Program Coordinators while engaged in specialized DEIB projects such as the Summer Camp Program designed to introduce first generation and historically underrepresented high school students to business school education.
  • Supports and assists the Undergraduate Program office with the Partners in Education program.
  • Develops, organizes, and teaches workshops to assist students with matters that involve goal setting, self-assessment, and time management skills to ensure high levels of retention and academic achievement.
  • Supports students in planning and decision-making such as establishing an academic plan, selecting courses, evaluating opportunities for study-abroad experiences, preparing for careers, and networking with alumni and industry leaders.

Other Functions

  • Performs other duties as assigned relative to moving DEIB initiatives forward.
  • Works collaboratively and effectively on a team and manages multiple priorities to support DEIB strategic priorities of the Isenberg School and University of Massachusetts.
  • Keeps abreast of pertinent developments at the university and higher education.
  • Assists in staffing programs and events for student success sponsored by the DEIB office.
  • Manages student staff and volunteers.
  • Participates in local, regional, and national travel for off campus events or meetings.
  • Serves on university/school committees as requested or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of experience in academic counseling and/or advising.
  • Two (2) years of experience in DEIB workshop facilitation both in person and online, or comparable skill/experience with workshop facilitation.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating effectively with diverse populations across students, prospective students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of issues facing students from underrepresented groups in higher education. Proven competence in and commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging initiatives.
  • Understanding of and commitment to academic experience at a major research university, and experience working with a range of academic abilities.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality, work independently and as part of a team, manage conflict and handle difficult conversations and feedback.  
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment to solve or escalate urgent student problems with discretion and sensitivity.
  • Understands responsibilities with respect to Title IX, Clery and other compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in standard office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience with multiple software and applications (Microsoft Office Suite, OneDrive, ZOOM, Microsoft Teams, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure) 

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, or related fields.
  • Three (3) years (or more) of supervisory experience in DEIB programming, advising or program development in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working from an intersectional framework in supporting diverse student populations.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment.  

Work Schedule

  • Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm. 
  • Flexibility to work night and/or weekend events as business needs dictate.
  • Ability to participate in local, regional, and national travel for off campus events or meetings. 
  • This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee’s work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
