Position Summary and Duties
The Assistant Director of Student Life position offers a unique and rewarding role within the division of Student Development.
This is a 12-month, live-in position, the Assistant Director is responsible for the holistic student development within a residential area of approximately 450 – 700 students, 2 – 4 Graduate Residence Coordinators (GRCs), and 11 – 18 Resident Assistants (RAs.)
This Assistant Director of Student Life is responsible for the total student development program within a residence hall area, including the supervision and development of graduate and undergraduate student staff, development of a healthy community environment, adjudication and management of student conduct caseload, housing operations, crisis response and the coordination of a secondary assignment that supports the processes of the Office. Function as a contributing member of the Assistant Director team. May serve as a Messina mentor. Assistant Directors also have the opportunity to be involved in campus-wide initiatives that will expose them to a number of different areas in student development and higher education.
The Assistant Director directly supervises Graduate Residence Coordinators (GRC) and Office Assistants, they indirectly supervise Resident Assistants. They will provide leadership and participate in training’s, area staff meetings, in-services and one-on-one meetings. Oversee student conduct caseload for assigned residential area including completing all appropriate paperwork and updating information in the conduct database. Adjudicate Community Standards violations through Educational Conferences and Administrative Hearings. Delegate appropriate cases to Graduate Residence Coordinators and the Peer Conduct Board. Document observed possible violations of the Community Standards.
Develops and implements strategies and initiatives to create a safe, healthy, educational and inclusive residential environment. Create population-based learning outcomes and design area specific community development plans based on the Office’s social and educational aims. Collaborate and partner with University colleagues to support and promote residential and University initiatives.
Support both the departmental and divisional goals focused on diversity and inclusion. Manage resources and area budget. Oversee the completion of Room Condition Reports, Roommate Agreements, and periodic room inspections. Oversee area opening and closing processes.
Provide support and respond to crisis situations. Serve in the on-call duty rotation for campus-wide emergencies, 2-3 weeks per semester or as needed, potentially responding to emergencies in all areas of residential living. Meet with students as needed and provide referrals to University resources. Communicate and respond to concerns from parents, guardians, and other constituents. Report student concerns through appropriate channels. Follow up with students as directed by Office or Divisional leadership.

Required Qualifications
• Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling in Student Affairs or a related field.
• 1-3 years live-in residence hall experience, 1-3 years of post-graduate professional experience.
• Availability to work night, weekend, and on-call hours.
• Experience with on-call crisis response.
• Knowledge of Student Development Theory.
• Knowledge of the needs of a residential community.
• Supervision and delegation skills.
• Attention to detail.
• Ability to work autonomously and interdependently as needed.
• Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of constituents.
• Demonstrated ability to support and advocate for underrepresented students as well as creating opportunities dedicated to developing students’ understanding of identity development, privilege, oppression, social justice, bias, and/or inclusive language/actions.
• Experience and understanding of student conduct policies.
• Ability to support the University’s goals for institutional diversity, as well as the goals and values of a Catholic, Jesuit education.
