Position Focus:

The Assistant Director of Student Affairs will:

Plan and implement Office of Student Affairs events including community gatherings, creative activities, and wellness programming to support students throughout the academic year.

Promote student engagement, leadership, and connection by managing the Community Leaders (CLs) program and the OSA student workers and providing resources and trainings on a variety of related topics.

Support a variety of student organizations with the goal of enhancing communication and fostering community engagement.

Assess and identify trends impacting the student community; develop programs and resources to address needs.

Support the overall mission of the Office of Student Affairs and collaborate with members of the Student Affairs team to plan and assist with various initiatives including student wellness, student groups, student engagement and belonging, professional development, financial processing, and special events including orientation and commencement.

Develop, implement, and manage a variety of programs that provide support to, develop community among, and ensure the best possible experience for, Yale Law School students.

Work closely with Student Affairs staff throughout the University to ensure programs meet the specific needs of students.

Regularly assess and identify the needs of the students and scholar community; develop programs and resources to support these needs.

Participate fully in and contribute to office projects, including events, professional development, office operations and regular departmental meetings.

Essential Duties

1. Manages and leads research on various federal rules and regulations as well as University policies and procedures to resolve problems and determine the best course of action for the functional area. 2. Recommends course of action to higher authority for the handling and disposition of problems related to the functional area. 3. Counsel’s faculty, students and staff on issues related to administrative operations of the University function and areas of concern for the function. 4. Manages statistical and analytical information regarding office activities and areas of operational and administrative concern for the function. 5. Leads in long-range planning for the office activities of a specific functional area. 6. Interprets and administers various University and federal policies and regulations. 7. Disseminates accurate and up-to-date information regarding areas of concern. 8. Formulates and establishes policies regarding area’s function. 9. Manages a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

At least one year of comprehensive event planning experience from event conception through event execution.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite;  proven experience work with budgets for events and programming.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Self-starter with excellent organizational and project management skills who can work both independently and manage and oversee projects, programs, and events.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Professional demeanor in terms of confidentiality, positive attitude, effective communication, and ability to represent the department and the Law School at institutional and community levels.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Collaborative, team player with exceptional verbal and written communication skills who is willing and able to be flexible and shift to support the wide range of needs within a student affairs office.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Proven experience with conflict management techniques and de-escalation strategies.
