Position Title Assistant Director of Sorority and Fraternity Life & Volunteer Services

Primary Responsibilities
Function and Scope
The Assistant Director is a key member of the Campus Activities & Residential Engagement team providing leadership and vision within the functional areas of Sorority and Fraternity Life and Volunteer services. This position leads and manages the sorority and fraternity community, student leader risk management education and training, and the execution of key traditional events including Senior Week. With a commitment to well-being and serving as a relational leader, this role will develop and manage collaborative partnerships across the St. Lawrence community. The Assistant Director will lead efforts to empower students to seek out opportunities for reflective engagement both on and off campus, promote dynamic leadership development programming, and enhance the sorority and fraternity experience.
This is a 12-month, full-time position reporting directly to the Associate Dean of Student Life & Community Engagement. Remuneration includes a competitive salary and benefits package, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2024.
Position Responsibilities
Sorority & Fraternity Life:
  • Provide oversight and guidance to the fraternity and sorority community including self-governance, leadership development, prevention education, organization conduct, and advising chapter presidents and executive boards.
  • Plan and lead recruitment processes with councils and chapter leadership.
  • Enhance the sorority & fraternity experience through incorporation of best practices and collaborate with fraternities and sororities to foster a culture of active community engagement, mutual respect, and accountability. Maintain mutual relationships with inter/national headquarters, advisors, and house corporations.
  • Develop and maintain training on hazing compliance, safe social hosting, and proactive risk management practices for sorority and fraternity organizations, as well as other student groups; provide ongoing workshops and interactive training to the campus community.
  • Facilitate a culture of well-being through programming, education, relationship building, and advisement of the fraternity and sorority community.

Volunteer Services:
  • Serve as advisor to clubs and organizations focusing on community service, including the University’s Campus Kitchen program. Assist with budget proposals, general operations, event planning, identity formation, and promote learning moments through reflection exercises.
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with University partners, as well as local community partners, to support and enhance volunteer connections and service opportunities including any signature events and/or the creation of engagement opportunities as needed
  • Manage student interns for Volunteer Services and provide them with leadership opportunities to plan events, recruit volunteers, and execute volunteer programs.
  • Manage the Volunteer Services budget and oversee the budgets of student community service organizations and/or funding awarded by grants.
  • Coordinate Alternative Break Trip opportunities, including site selection, training for student trip leaders, and promote an educational experience.

Class Councils:
  • Advise Junior and Senior class councils and provide guidance to students on fundraising, event planning, and other initiatives.
  • Lead the planning and execution of the traditional Senior class celebrations, including 100th Night and Senior Week; lead all event planning, risk management, safe social host processes, and the hiring, training, and supervision of student staff.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • 1-4 years of prior experience in higher education as a professional staff member, graduate assistant, and/or a student paraprofessional leader is required. 1-4 years of experience working with or supporting a sorority/fraternity community is preferred.
  • Demonstrate a proficient theoretical understanding and application of student development theory and an appreciation for working in an inclusive, multicultural environment at a private liberal arts college.
  • Understand emerging issues in higher education, particularly as it relates to sorority and fraternity life and student leadership development.
  • Demonstrate intercultural competence and a commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice practices.
  • Comfortable with using and/or learning new technologies, software platforms, and A/V equipment.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as student programming needs and major events require.
  • Possess initiative, personal integrity, excellent interpersonal communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and a good sense of humor.
