Job Description

The Assistant Director of Retention Initiatives, under supervision of the Executive Director of the Student Academic Success Center, addresses individual, academic, financial, and social issues that may affect the persistence and eventual graduation of students from Texas A&M University-San Antonio. The Assistant Director will coordinate a wide array of efforts affecting progress towards graduation for a variety of special populations enrolled at the university. The individual in this role will develop, implement and assess initiatives that may impact student success and degree completion.

Responsibilities:

  • Organize and manage retention initiatives coordinated through the Student Academic Success Center

  • Hire, train and supervise retention specialists

  • Manage the early alert program, run reports in the university's learning management system -Civitas, and  analyze trends all retention related initiatives

  • Keep division apprised of retention trends, initiatives, and programs occurring on campus

  • Coordinate campus-wide re-enrollment campaigns including non-registered, de-registered, stop outs, and similar barriers towards degree completion.

  • Coordinate efforts regarding theDream.US scholar program, which includes working with students for retention purposes as well as recruitment of new students to the program

  • Coordinate efforts regarding special populations including but not limited to students affiliated with Dreamer, Honors, Greater Texas Foundation, and Athletic programs

  • Serve on internal and external committees related to the special populations

  • Support the Executive Director on the execution of the DREAM Summit annually

  • Suggests and directs access of University resources.

  • Manage a small caseload of students that fall into the special populations category

  • Assists students in addressing problems and connects them with appropriate support services on campus.

  • Conveys implications of various policies and procedures related to academic policies such as scholastic probation and suspension, dropping courses, and satisfactory academic progress.

  • Provides general information about financial aid and scholarship requirements.

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field.

  • Six (6) years of related experience in management.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in applicable field.

  • Five (5) years in teaching, advising, coaching, admissions, or related fields

  • Experience working with underserved and non-traditional student groups

  • Ability to collaborate with faculty and staff and to interact effectively with students

  • Ability to gather, track, and analyze data

  • Demonstrated experience using Excel or other MS Office software

  • Ability to use early alert systems, scheduling systems, and CRM systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to use the student information systems, BANNER.

  • Ability to use good judgment and work effectively under pressure.

  • Ability to work as a member of the team. Ability to work individually or in groups to complete projects.

  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to working with a diverse population.

  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations to students and faculty.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and provide excellent customer service to students, employees, and the community.

  • Ability to multi task.

  • Excellent verbal and communication skills
