Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Assistant Director of Resident Engagement.

Under the direction of the Director of Housing and Residence Life, the Assistant Director of Resident Engagement is responsible for the development and administration of an innovative and creative programming model charged with moving the institution forward in community building of the residential students and improvement of retention to the institution. The Assistant Director of Resident Engagement is responsible for planning and implementation of staff training for full-time, graduate and student staff positions. This position is responsible for the planning, organization, coordination, implementation and oversight of all aspects of the programmatic efforts. Working in a team approach, this position collaborates with faculty, staff and students institution-wide to create meaningful experiences that engage and connect residential students with the University.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Manage an innovative program that meets the needs and interests of residential students. Work closely with student Resident Assistants (RAs), Graduate Assistants (GAs) and Student Housing Association (SHA) leaders to shape and modify efforts in order to effectively connect residential students to their communities.
  • Primary responsibility for all departmental programming and education initiatives. Primary Housing and Residence Life (HRL) representative for support of university programming initiatives such as Welcome Week, Late Night at USI, Late Night Breakfast, Eagle Experience, etc. Implement diversity, equity and inclusion in programming and education initiatives and search processes.
  • Plan and implement staff training for full-time, graduate and student staff positions. Work closely with Associate Directors in planning staff training and development. Work closely with Associate Director on student staff search processes.
  • Directly supervises one Graduate Assistant for community development. Supervises two student programming assistants. Indirect supervision relationship with Area Coordinators (ACs) and Graduate Assistant staff.
  • Responsible for the evaluation and assessment of department programming, education, community development and training. Evaluate and assess to ensure program objectives are met. Maintain accurate records by tracking number, type and outcome of programs, events and initiatives.
  • Serves as the lead advisor for all Housing and Residence Life sponsored student organizations. This includes, but is not limited to: SHA, National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) and others as assigned. Support students in residential community programming efforts. Responsible for motivating and supporting the student staff and student volunteers, (Resident Assistants, Graduate Assistants, Student Housing Association leaders) in development of a vibrant program primarily geared toward residential students.
  • Serve as the Housing and Residence Life liaison with Special Events to coordinate summer camps. Supervise summer student staff who work with summer camps, conferences and summer resident housing. Works closely with the Assistant Director of Business Operations regarding summer camps facilities. Coordinates department participation in university student initiatives such as the Pathways Program during summer months.
  • Work closely with Director, Associate Directors and Assistant Director on department marketing, communications and social media initiatives.
  • Work closely with Area Coordinators to help them develop pride for all aspects of housing. Provide direction, mentorship and development to and meet periodically with Area Coordinators. Attend weekly Area Coordinator staff meetings.
  • Maintain visibility in and awareness of housing areas to proactively serve community.
  • Collaborate with campus-wide programmers of various departments to support programmatic needs and interests of student body. Support university and strategic goal initiatives.
  • In conjunction with Director and Associate Director, oversee budget management for programmatic initiatives of the department.
  • Serve in on-call Leadership Team rotation with Director and Associate Directors. Work closely with the Vice President, Associate Directors, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), USI's Public Safety, Dean of Students Office (DOSO), HRL Director and other identified campus partners in response to emergency and crisis situations.
  • Serve on or chair Housing and Residence Life committees and/or university committees as assigned by the Director or Associate Director.
  • Stay current with national trends in Housing and Residence Life programming and education efforts. Assist with Housing and Residence Life events such as check-in, check-out and move-in.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director or Associate Director.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Three years related experience required.
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently as well as be an effective team member. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student, faculty, staff, parent/guardian and visitor population.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, written and oral presentation skills.
  • Refined presentation skills, in both large and small groups.
  • Presentation of a consistently professional demeanor at all times, even in difficult or frustrating situations.
  • Basic knowledge of marketing, advertising and graphic design.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Master’s degree preferred. Degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration or related field preferred.
  • One year of full-time post masters experience preferred.
  • Previous hall director or student activities programming experience preferred.
  • Previous supervision of student staff preferred.
