The Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University invites applicants for an Assistant Director of Research. This position will be critical in pursuing the Drake Institute’s vision to promote teaching excellence to advance the educational mission of the university and enhance student learning. The Assistant Director will provide key leadership in efforts, programs, and services related to educational development research, discipline-based education research, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

The Assistant Director of Research will provide leadership and support in developing and implementing research efforts designed to contribute to an expanding educational development knowledge base, while also developing and advancing research-related collaborations with university partners. The Assistant Director will lead and manage programs and university-wide initiatives related to the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and discipline-based education research (DBER) and will provide both individual and unit-level consultative services in response to needs and questions that emerge from teaching-related research efforts across the university.

Responsibilities

Internal Research Leadership (30%):

  • Leads the development and advancement of an Institute research agenda with focus on investigating the impacts of educational development efforts.
  • Collaborates with Drake Institute staff in the design and implementation of research in educational development that documents the design and investigates the impact of Institute programs and services.
  • Contributes to internal and external dissemination of research findings through publications and presentations.

Program Management (30%):

  • Leads implementation of the Institute’s annual SoTL and DBER Learning Community.
  • Oversees management of the Institute’s annual Research and Implementation Grant Program.
  • Develops and facilitates workshops and other events that support increased engagement in SoTL and DBER at Ohio State.
  • Manages and facilitates annual Ohio State support for the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) Teaching-As-Research (TAR) Community.
  • Proposes new programs and initiatives aimed at advancing SoTL and DBER across disciplines and career stages.

Research Support (25%):

  • Provides guidance, resources, and consultative services to individuals (e.g., faculty, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students), teams, and academic units at Ohio State interested in designing, implementing, and assessing SoTL, DBER, and other educational research-related projects.
  • Furthers development of a university-wide culture of evidence-based teaching by promoting scholarly inquiry into teaching and learning practice.
  • Creates digital resources that support all who teach at Ohio State in entering and continuing engagement in SoTL and DBER.
  • Develops research partnerships with Ohio State faculty and staff engaging in externally funded research efforts around teaching and learning.

Staff Management and Supervision (10%):

  • Staff coaching, development, and supervision.

Additional Duties (5%)

  • Engages in continual professional learning to maintain and strengthen knowledge and skills.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.  
  • Demonstrated experience with designing, implementing, and disseminating research in education, scholarship of teaching and learning, and/or discipline-based education research.
  • Strong verbal, written, and visual communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to and consult on the design of studies that utilize a range of research design approaches (e.g., qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience with program management.
  • Ability to work independently to meet organizational goals and outcomes within specified timeframes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a dynamic team.

Desired Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree.
  • Previous work at a center for teaching and learning or experience working with an office/program related to teaching and learning.
  • Experience working research management applications and platforms.
  • Experience delivering educational development programs and services.
  • Grant writing or development experience.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching in higher education.
