Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Nonprofit Pathways provides programmatic oversight of student engagement programs within Phillips Brooks House.  The Assistant Director of Nonprofit Pathways oversees day-to-day program functions related to student leadership development, residential student engagement strategies, summer fellowship experiences, winter break volunteer opportunities, and post-graduate public service employment opportunities for current Harvard undergraduates and recent graduates in the public interest sector.   Phillips Brooks House programs focus extensively on student civic engagement, building community partnerships, and alumni/ae engagement.  Harvard College provides support to a wide-range of community service organizations, alumni/ae Clubs, Shared Interest Groups (SIGs), and public service initiatives. 


Position Description

The Assistant Director of Nonprofit Pathways will collaborate with a variety of campus partners to sustain cross-departmental initiatives.  This position directly reports to the Director of Pathways to Practice and works in conjunction with the Assistant Dean for Civic Engagement and Service and the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Student Engagement.  

Responsibilities include

Student Recruiting and Advising : The Assistant Director of Nonprofit Pathways has primary oversight of advising students about civic pathways related to term-time, summer, winter, and post-graduate work.  This role also has primary oversight of recruiting students for leadership and professional development opportunities across campus, which also involves reading student applications and recommending candidates to our community partners.  This role will also develop resources to engage all students with an emphasis on supporting incoming first-year students and students from underrepresented communities.

Program Management : The Assistant Director of Nonprofit Pathways manages operations for a suite of public service programs for students.  These currently include the Mindich Service Fellowship Program, the Stad Fellowship Program, Harvard Clubs Summer Community Service Fellowship Program, the Arthur Liman Public Interest Law Fellowship Program, the SPARK program for pre-matriculated students, the Fong Family Winternship Program, and the Priscilla Chan Summer Service Stipend. 

Community Partnership Building : The Assistant Director of Nonprofit Pathways will support partnership building work related to term-time, summer, winter, and post-graduate programs.  The Assistant Director of Professional Pathways collaborates with several departments on campus to support campus conferences and regionally-based partnerships and programs, such as nonprofit board recruitment fairs and graduate school networking nights.

Communications : The Assistant Director of Student Pathways is responsible for social media efforts, with a focus on efforts that connect students to professional development opportunities.

Event Support:  The Assistant Director of Student Pathways provides support for departmental events. Some of these events currently include Public Service Recruiting Day, the First-Year Day of Service, the Public Interested Conference, the Engaged Scholarship and Social Justice Research Conference, and a series of non-profit board recruitment fairs that Harvard sponsors across the U.S.


Basic Qualifications

Basic/Required Qualifications: Must have Bachelor's Degree with 2-4 years of progressive leadership experience related to community engagement work.

Additional/Preferred Qualifications: We are seeking dynamic and versatile candidates with strong problem-solving skills.  We are seeking candidates with outstanding interpersonal skills who can work with a diverse array of constituencies.  We are seeking candidates with strong organizational and time management along with Strong writing and presentation skills. We are also seeking candidates who can manage relationships with strong attention to detail and discretion.


Physical Requirements

  • Sitting using near vision use for reading and computer use for extended periods of time
  • Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in an office setting.
  • May be required to work nights and weekends

Additional Information

This position has a term appointment of 2 years from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension.
