Position Details


General Statement
A multi-year program aimed at assisting students in the exploration of, preparation for, and application to health professional schools. The focus is on the academic, clinical, and professional courses required experience to create a well-rounded and competitive application.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Professional advising for both undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate students interested in pursuing various health professions.
  • Help coordinate academic advising as well as all advising-related outreach and communications in assigned units.
  • Promote best practices of advising services in assigned units.
  • Implement and assist with campus-wide advising initiatives and assessment.
  • Co-teach HMED course.
  • Assist the Director in facilitating and managing the multi-year process of students’ applications to health professions schools.
  • Facilitate and plan support programs for students (entrance exam study groups, peer advisors and mentors, application help workshops and group advising sessions).
  • Assist in all areas of application preparation for students.
  • Communicating with prospective students and families about Health Professions Advising, MSU Friday’s, prospective student meetings, and other events.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Master’s degree and relevant experience in student advising, career development, and student supervision and/or student services.
  • Experience working with academic curricula, degree requirements, policies and procedures in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of higher education offices and resources that support student success.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to work on a schedule that may include occasional evening and weekend commitments.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience working with enrollment and degree auditing software, such as DegreeWorks, CatCourse, Banner, MyInfo and/or relational database
  • Experience in health professions advising.

    • Possess the ability to troubleshoot problems and have candid and effective conversations.
    • Represent both Advising Commons and the academic unit(s) served in a professional and courteous manner.
    • Actively pursue training and professional development opportunities.
