Job Summary:
Under the Director of First Year Mentoring Programs' supervision, the incumbent will assist in providing leadership and oversight of the R.I.S.E. Scholars and EPIC Mentoring programs. The Assistant Director will work with the Director to ensure efficient program development, fiscal management, and student programming implementation. The Assistant Director will also share supervision of a staff of peer mentors and mentees. The successful candidate will collaborate with campus entities to implement leadership development activities that equip student mentors with the skills to counsel empathically, communicate effectively, and understand the diverse experiences of their peers.
Essential Functions:


  • Under the Director of First Year Mentoring Programs' leadership, provide direct support and supervision of the R.I.S.E. Scholars and EPIC Mentoring programs.

  • Supervise one graduate assistant and assist in the shared responsibilities of supervising peer mentors and mentees.

  • Plan, organize, and coordinate the delivery of services and programs for all members of the R.I.S.E. Scholars Network.

  • Meet regularly with the mentors assigned to provide leadership, direction, and advice.

  • Coordinate the peer mentor recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation process.

  • Partner and strategize with other units/departments to support the current program and launch new initiatives, resolve student and operational issues, develop plans, and establish annual objectives.

  • Make recommendations for the program's maintenance and improvement through the analysis of user insights data, metrics, and other feedback mechanisms.

  • Assist the Director with the fiscally responsible management of financial resources.

  • Manage the creation of marketing materials, including flyers, presentations, and reels.

  • Monitor and manage social media accounts, ensuring timely responses to comments and questions raised.

  • Assist in developing, designing, and implementing social and academic programming.

  • Work closely with peer mentors to support teams and actively participate in staff meetings/training.

  • Plan and implement annual events that support the mission and goals of the mentoring programs.

  • Annually assess mentor programs to measure and report on effectiveness in achieving desired outcomes and a meaningful experience for students.

  • Develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with the University's community, including faculty members, administrators, staff members, and students.

  • Participate in the New Student Orientation providing interactive presentations and content, a presence for pop-up tabling, and engagement with students and their families.

  • Engage in cross-departmental projects to support the strategic priorities of the Division of Student Success.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Competencies:

  • This role entails in-depth analysis and creative problem solving around the construction, implementation, and development of programs and processes for the peer mentoring programs.

  • Must have excellent organizational, presentation, training, and written/oral communication skills and the ability to provide outstanding customer service in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Supervisory Responsibility:
The person in this position will supervise one graduate assistant and assist in the shared responsibilities of supervising approximately 100 peer mentors and 300+ mentees.
Work Environment:
This position operates in a professional office environment; this position requires you to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; to carry work and use controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; communicate. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 10 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the employee include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus, etc.].
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
The position is full-time. The days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This position regularly requires evening hours and weekend work.
Travel:
Travel is primarily local and may include visits to the other NY campuses. Occasionally, travel outside the local area may be required.
Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, or a related field preferred.

  • At least 3 years of full-time work experience in a higher education setting; strong consideration for candidates with experience in a diverse higher education setting focused on peer mentoring and/or student leadership.

  • The successful candidate will show knowledge of student development, learning, and leadership theories and understand the cultural, social, and educational needs of a multi-ethnic campus community.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary for this position is $62,400. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
This position may be relocated to any of St. John's University's physical locations at any time.
