Job Description


Reporting to the Director of Finance and Deputy Chief of Staff, the Assistant Director of Finance and Business Partner for Energy and Utilities will lead and manage the daily operations of the Virginia Tech Electric Service and the Energy and Utilities management area, which provides a full range of centralized fiscal and business support to the Energy and Utilities units; provide fiscal and business support to Virginia Tech Electric Service; develop and implement financial, administrative and personnel policies and procedures for the management area that are consistent with established state and university systems; develop and manage annual operating budgets, prepare short and long-term forecasts for revenues and expenses for financial planning; serve as a liaison in coordination of all financial activity with other university units as needed; evaluate departmental programs by applying knowledge of research methodology and statistical and analytical techniques to validate current programs; explore methods for future improvement; and responsible for direct supervision of VTES Business Office Staff.

The Assistant Director of Finance and Business Partner for Energy and Utilities will provide leadership in financial administration, internal controls, foster team work and collaboration, and demonstrate a high commitment to service by applying extensive knowledge, skills, and management experience.


Required Qualifications

- Advanced degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Management or related field or equivalent
combination of education and experience managing business operations which equates to an advanced degree.
- Demonstrated experience in higher education and state or governmental agency involving budget or financial analysis.
- Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of budget formulation, evaluation, and execution; accounting practices and procedures; accepted business practices.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and substantial experience in supervisory role of a business unit.
- Demonstrated high-level proficiency with Microsoft word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
- Proven ability to cultivate positive working relationships, foster team work, and support collaboration.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong analytical skills; ability to perform complex calculations, analyze accounts, and create reports.


Preferred Qualifications

- Familiarity with university policies and procedures.
- Related work experience in a large, public institution
or similar environment.
- Demonstrated thorough understanding of higher education finance and business operations.
- Previous experience budgeting for an auxiliary enterprise.
- Experience with Banner Finance.


Salary Information

Starting salary at $95,000; Commensurate with experience.

Additional Information


- Work is primarily performed in an office environment and involves considerable sitting and repetitive motion through the use of a computer.
- Must have a criminal background check
- May need to work additional hours outside of normal schedule to meet the needs of the department and division.
- As necessary, may work some evenings or weekends to meet department needs.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
